If you or your loved one are experiencing a serious or life-threatening injury and illness call 000 immediately or go to the Emergency Department at Canberra Hospital.
Examples of life-threatening conditions include:
- difficulty breathing
- chest pain
- severe trauma
- allergic reactions
- head, neck or eye injuries.

For mental health emergencies call Access Mental Health on 1800 629 354 or (02) 6205 1065 24 hours, 7 days a week for immediate support and assistance.
Cancer Rapid Assessment Unit (RAU)
If your receiving treatment for cancer at the Canberra Region Cancer Centre and are experiencing an urgent medical issue related to your treatment call our triage line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on (02) 5124 4401.
Walk-in Centres
For non-life-threatening medical situations go to a Walk-in Centre.
Walk-in Centres (WiC) can help with:
- colds, flu
- fractures (broken bones)
- infections
- cuts and sprains
- bites and stings
Children under one year of age and people with complex or serious conditions should see their GP.
See your GP for:
- headaches/migraines
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
- colds and flu
- sore throat
- backache
- earache
- mental health.
Many GP clinics offer extended opening hours in the evenings and on weekends. Check your GP’s opening hours, or find-a-heath service near you.
CALMS
If you can’t see your regular GP you can contact CALMS, the Canberra After hours Locum Medical Service, to see one of their GPs.
CALMS clinics are open after hours on weekdays and weekends. A fee applies for consultations.

National Home Doctor Service
The National Home Doctor Service provides after hours, bulk billed, doctor home visits and services most Canberra suburbs.
