Rehabilitation, Aged and Community Services (RACS) is a vibrant and diverse Division within Canberra Health Services providing multidisciplinary rehab, aged and community-based care across a range of settings. This includes Canberra Hospital, University of Canberra Hospital, Community Health Centres and Village Creek Centre in Kambah. UCH is the ACT's first sub-acute rehabilitation hospital on the grounds of the University of Canberra. The University of Canberra Hospital (UCH) is part of the CHS's planned network of health facilities designed to meet the needs of our ageing and growing population. University of Canberra Hospital is Canberra’s first purpose-built rehabilitation hospital and supports people recovering from surgery, injury, or experiencing mental illness. The main priorities of the Clinical Development Nurse are to coordinate education and promote a learning culture within UCH. As part of the model of care for UCH, the clinical staff will have a more active role in the first response team. As the CDN you will be a part of the first response team when required and assist in ensuring the relevant staff have Intermediate Life Support skills and knowledge to effectively participate in this team. The successful applicant will have an understanding of the principles of rehabilitation nursing, however, will be supported by the Clinical Nurse Educator and Multi-disciplinary team

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Consultant you will deliver high quality, evidence based, patient centred care, to our critically ill patients and their families.

  • Facilitate clinical teaching and assessment of nurses within the clinical workplace utilising adult learning principles and following practice standards and policies to ensure nurses maintain mandatory and essential training, as well as required competencies.
  • Be an active and regular member of the UCH medical emergency response (Hospital Emergency Response Officers).
  • Facilitate the development of clinical in-services to staff in response to identified education requirements and contemporary evidence-based practices.
  • Ensure staff have essential education requirements completed on an annual basis and
    1.Facilitate regular assessment of staff for essential learning competencies
    2.Assist CNC to identify learning needs
    3.Assist staff with Strengths, Engagement and Development Plans.
  • Assist in the support, development, and assessment of new preceptors in the clinical area.
  • Support safe and evidence-based practice through:
    1.Supporting policy change and new clinical initiatives to foster a dynamic workplace
    2.Participate in risk management, quality improvement, nursing practice review and clinical research activities
    3.Participate in the development and review of specific learning framework and packages to reflect evidence-based practice and current literature.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Tertiary Qualification or related qualification
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

  • A Minimum 4 years’ full time post registration work experience

  1. Proven clinical competence within the acute and sub-acute clinical setting including medical, surgical and rehabilitation nursing.

  3. Demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills and leadership with the ability to communicate and liaise effectively and appropriately with staff, patients, and other key stakeholders in a diverse range of situations including negotiation, delegation and conflict resolution using consistent and transparent processes and ensuring confidentiality.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of, commitment to, and participation in nursing practice review, educational research, quality improvement and reflective practice, and a commitment to personal ongoing learning and development.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
