Exceptional Career Development

We have career pathways that support clinicians at every stage of their career.

Our world-class training and development initiatives mean that we attract and develop some of the leading medical professionals in the country.

Nursing careers

We welcome new graduates, foundation and experienced nurses, and provide extensive expert training and learning opportunities at all stages of critical care nursing levels.

Our nurses provide patient centred care alongside medical, allied health and other support staff. We offer:

  • a commitment to continued professional development
  • one on one bedside teaching
  • specialised study days
  • self-directed learning packages
  • competency-based assessments
  • in-services.

Our ICU recognises prior learning with an established program of integration, and we employ a graded leadership model to allow development of leadership skills, as well as clinical skills.

Many of our nurses hold postgraduate qualifications in critical care nursing, including masters level degrees, whilst our affiliation with several nursing universities means our nursing students work closely alongside our experienced clinicians.

Medical careers

We welcome medical officers to the unit via our four-year Critical Care Training Program. During the program, junior medical officers are rotated through anaesthetics, Emergency Department and ICU, and receive daily teaching sessions with a multidisciplinary focus.

We also provide extensive preparation courses for the primary and secondary examinations which include simulated crisis team practice scenarios.

Our ICU is accredited with the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand to provide the maximum 24 months of general training, and meets College requirements for training in neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery and trauma. This means you can work with us at any stage of your journey to become an intensive care specialist. We are also affiliated with the Australian National University at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Our team includes a group of highly invested Supervisors of Training and college examiners, and we actively facilitate rotations through anaesthetics, internal medicine and paediatrics. In addition, we have established links with the Capital Region Retrieval Service and rural placements in surrounding NSW communities to provide a 360-degree experience in all aspects of critical care.

Medical staff seeking senior positions are encouraged to contact the Clinical Director via email at ICU@act.gov.au

Physiotherapy careers

Our physiotherapy team provide services to the ICU 24/7 and is led by dedicated ICU physiotherapists.

We focus on early mobilisation, rehabilitation and recovery, even while high level organ system support is being provided.

Our work includes inspiratory muscle training, strategic weaning, extubation readiness assessment, ventilator hyperinflation, non-invasive ventilation in physiotherapy, multidisciplinary rehabilitation planning and competency with ICU-related outcome measures.

We are committed to research and teaching and offer an ICU observership program for physiotherapists interested in an ongoing career in ICU.
