Position overview

The Nursing and Midwifery Education Unit (NMEU) provides orientation, education and wellbeing support for new nurses commencing at Canberra Health Services (CHS). It provides targeted support for paid undergraduate student nurses and midwives (USN/M), novice and refresher nurses, and international recruits. The NMEU also coordinates the CHS Transition to Practice Program (TTPP), a structured 12-month program for Enrolled and Registered Nurses, designed to facilitate a smooth transition from student to practitioner. This role collaborates closely with clinical educators and managers across CHS to support the professional development and psychosocial wellbeing of TTPP participants

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following

Under limited direction of the TTPP Coordinator and working collaboratively with relevant Nurse Managers, you will provide one on one bedside teaching, clinical support, ongoing evaluation, and feedback for graduate nurses across a diversity of clinical areas within CHS.

  1. Facilitate clinical teaching and assessment of graduate nurses enrolled in the CHS Transition to Practice Program, applying adult learning principles and adhering to CHS nursing practice standards and policies to ensure compliance with mandatory training and professional competencies.
  2. Contribute to the delivery of a clinically based orientation program, participate in graduate nurse recruitment, and provide on-going support for clinical practice and wellbeing, aligned with contemporary evidence-based practice and workforce needs.
  3. Provide clinical support to graduate nurses through regular site visits, offering feedback, reflective practice, debriefing sessions, and competency assessments to enhance clinical capability and integration into practice settings.
  4. Contribute to organisational risk management and clinical governance, actively participating in quality improvement initiatives and divisional safety and quality programs
  5. Monitor and document the progress of graduate nurses throughout the program, providing reports to the CHS Transition to Practice Program Coordinator and relevant Divisional managers.
  6. Collaborate effectively with colleagues and leaders, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of legislation relevant to clinical practice within Canberra Health Services. Provide informed input into the development and review of clinical policies and practice manuals
  7. Demonstrate leadership and professional autonomy, fostering collegial relationships and role modelling exemplary professional conduct. Promote a positive, customer focused workplace culture, support staff wellbeing, and demonstrate a proactive approach problem solving.
  8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

    RN Level 2 pre-requisite:

    Minimum years of worked experience required for a Registered Nurse (RN) Level 2 classification at Canberra Health Services (CHS):

  • Four (4) years (6840 hours) of post graduate hours of practice worked in direct or indirect roles (inclusive of 7 weeks annual leave per year)
  • OR

  • Completion of a relevant post graduate certificate (or working towards) and three (3) years (5130 hours) worked in direct or indirect roles
  • OR

  • Minimum of 2 yrs (1978 hours) RN experience if in possession of 2 or more years of prior EN experience within area of specialty
  • Consideration can be given for exceptional candidates which must be consulted with the relevant DON/M prior to Delegate sign off for the selection process.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
