Position overview

The Cardiac Catheter Laboratory is a clinical specialty area that undertakes a range of cardiac diagnostic, interventional and electrophysiology procedures. Canberra Hospital has three laboratories, a procedure room and a day ward staffed and equipped to provide a 24-hour service for patients with acute and chronic cardiac conditions. Normal operational service is Monday to Friday, 07:00hrs to 18:00hrs with on-call coverage for STEMI activation outside of business hours.

Registered Nurses are members of the multidisciplinary team and have a key role in caring for patients admitted to the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory.

The Clinical Development Nurse is expected to have a demonstrated competence in advanced nursing practice and provide guidance to less experienced nursing staff and students. The applicant will have operational responsibility to the Clinical Nurse Consultant. The CDN will be required to demonstrate experience in clinical teaching and a sound knowledge of adult learning principles to support ongoing clinical education, precept new and junior staff, mandatory skills assessment and competency assessment processes within the clinical practice setting of the Cath Lab.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Consultant you will deliver high quality, evidence based, patient centred care, to our critically ill patients and their families.

  • Facilitate clinical teaching within the workplace utilising adult learning principles and following practice standards and policies.
  • Facilitate the development of clinical in-services to nurses considering the local requirements and contemporary evidence-based practices. Roster other Level 2s onto an in-service program to provide presentations for Ward staff.
  • Facilitate reflective practice sessions for nurses within clinical area. In collaboration with CNC facilitate or arrange debriefing sessions with nurses and provide advice and support as required.
  • Attend to competency-based assessment of all nurses within clinical settings (especially the Transition to Practice Nurse) as outlined in ANC and other specialised competencies where they exist or where they may be developed within the clinical area, record nurse competency assessments and assist the CNC to identify learning needs.
  • Ensure nurses within the clinical area who assess mandatory skills are credentialed annually. Assist in the support, development and assessment of new preceptors on the clinical area.
  • Actively assist in the development and revision of clinical policy, procedures, nursing practice review, and quality improvement activities.
  • Assist in cardiac procedures and in Day ward as required operationally.  This includes being a part of the on-call roster.
  • Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice ensuring the delivery of high-quality person and family centred, safe and high-quality patient care.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Competencies

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following

  • Experienced Cath Lab Nurse with advanced skills.
  • Accountable for NMBA and own standards, actions and the outcomes of own nursing practice, professional advice given and for activities delegated to RNs, ENs, AINs, nursing students or other healthcare workers
  • Adhere to established guidelines, protocols, procedures, standards, and systems of work as set by the organisation and participate in developing, evaluating, and updating clinical service procedures, protocols, standards, and guidelines.
  • Contribute to promoting a learning culture by encouraging reflection and professional development, providing clinical teaching, in-service education, and assisting/supporting others to maintain portfolios/ records of learning while acting as a clinical and educational resource within an area based on knowledge, skills, and experience.
  • Act as a leader, role model and provide preceptorship to colleagues and senior clinicians who provide preceptorship and support at point of care e.g. capacity building within the clinical team environment.
  • Participate in developing and undertaking quality initiatives e.g. auditing, practice development, and continuous quality improvement activities relevant to role and position.
  • Work collaboratively in leading implementation of policy, procedures and clinical practice changes.
  • Proactively engage with colleagues and peers to support the achievement of trauma-informed, recovery oriented mental health service delivery and mental health nursing clinical care outcomes for consumers, their family/carers

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Tertiary Qualification or related qualification
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

Desirable

  • Post graduate qualification in or working towards a higher degree in Education or Cert IV in Training and Assessment is desirable.
  • Following a period of training and having achieved competency in Advanced Life Support the position includes an on-call commitment.
