The Surgical Inpatient Wards of the Canberra Hospital are responsible for delivering services to inpatients in the following specialties: General Surgery, Gynae Oncology, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Urology, Cardio-thoracic, Orthopaedics, Plastics, Otolaryngology, Maxillofacial, Emergency General Surgery and Trauma Care.
Ward B57B Neurosurgery is a 28-bed inpatient unit delivering patient centered care with a focus on the management of patients with altered Neurological function. The unit includes a 8 bed Neurosurgical Acute Care Unit (NACU) allowing close observation of post-operative intracranial surgery patients and neurosurgical patients who are at risk of deterioration. Ward B57B has a great team of nurses who strive to provide positive outcomes for patients through the utilisation of the Team Nursing model
The Clinical Nurse Consultant of B57B- Neurosurgery, OMFS and Trauma is responsible for the operational management and leadership, within the clinical environment including the management of nursing workloads. Applicants must have demonstrated high level of management, communication, leadership and expertise in co-ordinating the clinical practices within the clinical environment to ensure the efficient and effective provision of quality patient care.
This is a permanent full-time position. The successful candidate will be required to work Monday to Friday within business hours.
Key Responsibilities
Under limited direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing you will perform the day-to-day operational management of services within the unit including management of nursing workloads / models of care and patient flow both internal and external to the unit. The CNC will provide expert clinical leadership and management within a multidisciplinary framework, embed, and maintain the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards at a unit level as well as develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate timely and appropriate patient flow.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Provide strong leadership for nurses in all aspects of clinical practice and models of care including planning, implementing, and evaluating professional development, managing education, research, teaching, workforce planning and quality work environment for the unit
- Be accountable for the flexible allocation of human and financial resources within the unit to ensure achievement of an agreed level of service and reporting of variances against agreed targets
- Lead, co-ordinate and work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate change management initiatives to achieve the strategic objectives of Canberra Health Services (CHS) and to achieve the NSQHSS
- Provide strong leadership to and develop nursing staff within the designated clinical area, providing an environment that encourages regular feedback and fosters innovation to meet the constant demands within the clinical healthcare setting as well as ensuring that performance management agreements are in place and discussed regularly
- Ensure the development, maintenance and review of clinical guidelines/procedures/policies are aligned with the strategic goals of Canberra Health Services (CHS) and align with the NSQHSS.
- Monitor relevant key performance indicators, quality data and formulate appropriate management plans to achieve this.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential:
- Relevant post graduate qualification and or demonstrated currency of nursing practice in a tertiary level acute care environment within the last five years.
- Experience in Leadership and Management and / or a post graduate qualification in nursing, health management or leadership.
- Registered as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable:
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Experience
- 5 years’ Work experience in acute clinical setting.
Desirable:
- Prior experience in management will be highly desirable.

- Demonstrated outcomes in innovation, quality improvement, policy developments and change management in the pursuit of best practice to achieve excellence in line with the NSQHSS.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and mentor staff within a complex health care environment and management of human, financial and material resources to meet agreed targets.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
