Maternity and Gynaecology Outpatient Services

Centenary Hospital for Women and Children

The Centenary Hospital for Women and Children is the tertiary referral centre for obstetrics and gynaecology in the ACT and surrounding regional areas. We provide comprehensive, person-centred care to women and pregnant people through a range of specialised outpatient services.

Our Maternity and Gynaecology Outpatient Department includes:

  • Antenatal and Gynaecology Clinics – Offering routine and specialist care throughout pregnancy and across the spectrum of gynaecological health.
  • Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit – Providing advanced care for complex pregnancies, including diagnostic and therapeutic services.
  • MIDCALL – A postnatal home visiting service supporting families in the early weeks after birth.
  • Childbirth Education – Preparing expectant parents with evidence-based information and support for labour, birth, and early parenting.

These services work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, high-quality, and compassionate care tailored to each individual’s needs.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Midwifery the Clinical Midwifery Manager will provide clinical and operational leadership to midwifery and nursing teams that fosters a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

The Clinical Midwifery Manager will be accountable for the following responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:

  1. Provide leadership and foster a commitment to safe, high-quality, woman-centred care in partnership with the midwifery leadership team, supporting change management initiatives that advance the strategic objectives of the Women, Youth & Children Division.
  2. Champion the role of midwives & nurses within the multidisciplinary team, recognising their expertise and ensuring their contribution to positive outcomes for women and their families.
  3. Create and maintain an environment that promotes individual and team growth, enabling all staff to reach their full potential through professional opportunities, constructive feedback, and open dialogue.
  4. Manage the effective use of resources within the clinical area, including accurate forecasting and reporting of staffing requirements, consumables, equipment, and administrative needs, supported by clinical and rostering systems.
  5. Monitor and evaluate clinical practice to identify professional development needs, implement education strategies, and support personal and team development through learning plans and performance objectives.
  6. Lead a culture of continuous improvement by collaborating on, initiating, and participating in quality improvement initiatives, policy development, strategic planning, and research activities.
  7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
  8. These responsibilities are to be carried out in accordance with Canberra Health Services policies, procedures, and professional standards.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

Essential:

  • Relevant graduate or post graduate qualification in midwifery practice and extensive clinical experience working professionally in midwifery.
  • Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.


Desirable:

  • Post graduate qualifications in midwifery, management, health service management, business administration or working towards.

  • Well-developed, relevant, management experience including conceptual and analytical skills relating to financial, human resource management and reporting.
  • High level leadership, people and budget management skill. Familiarity with hospital information systems and data reporting tools.

  • This role is full-time, Monday to Friday, with no weekend or public holiday work.  Flexible part-time options may be negotiated.
