Position overview
The Nurse Unit Manager of RACS is responsible for the sustained recruitment of nurses for all areas within the Division. They manage the UCH casual pool, return to work programs, roster management whilst maintaining accurate position reports and associated management of nursing workloads. The NUM is to provide expert clinical leadership and management within a nursing and multidisciplinary team. It is expected that the NUM will promote, incorporate, and maintain the National Safety and Quality Health Standards at a ward level. Assist with patient flow through management of the UCH waitlist and in collaboration with CHS and other health services in the ACT.
This position is based at UCH on the University of Canberra campus and is a part of the RACS Nurse Leadership team and is responsible for the strategic and operational management across the RACS Division ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective operations of all RACS areas at UCH, Canberra Hospital and Community Nursing. This position will report directly to the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) UCH and will work in collaboration with the other ADON’s within the division of RACS to provide exceptional healthcare.
Key Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Provide a Managerial and Clinical resource for defined clinical service area(s). While liaising with unit clinical leaders in planning and coordinating staffing resources by:
- Shared responsibility with the Clinical Nurse Consultants for the management of staff issues, ensuring consistency with relevant legislation, policies, practice standards, processes and industrial framework for nurses within clinical units.
- Shared accountability with the Clinical Nurse Consultants for allocation of and expenditure of resources within designated clinical areas. This includes the provision of accurate information on changes to staffing requirements based on ongoing assessment of need, as part of the nursing budget preparation review, maintenance and purchasing.
- Act as a resource and support person for all staff in the development and implementation of quality improvement activities. Evaluate and initiate policy and procedural change as required.
- Lead, promote and progress change processes as identified within Canberra Health Services, University of Canberra Hospital, nursing strategic and business plans. In conjunction with Clinical Nurse Consultants develop local business plans which incorporate and link to Canberra Health Services plans and frameworks.
- Conduct annual performance appraisal interviews with staff using the personal professional development program. Assist in the development and implementation of information systems and ensure staff receive regular feedback, education, to meet the required standard of delivery focusing on goals, continuing professional development to meet best practices and quality processes.
- Ensure the provisions of a safe environment for all patients and staff within the division of RACS through ensuring Infection Control and WH&S guidelines are followed. Including actively promoting and maintain a harmonious working relationship between all members of the nursing staff and multidisciplinary team.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
- Ensuring rosters and allocation of staff within areas of responsibility will provide a safe and high level of patient care
- Monitor and take responsibility for staffing levels
- Participate in staff recruitment, orientation and staff development programs

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential:
- Tertiary Qualification or related qualification in nursing
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Desirable:
- Post graduate qualifications in nursing, management or health related field.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ full time work experience
- Current Driver’s License
Desirable:
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
