Position overview
The Department of Neonatology is the only tertiary level 6 Neonatal Unit in the ACT and surrounding NSW. It includes 36 funded beds, 18 beds in NICU and 18 beds in Special Care (SCN), as well as ACT NETS retrieval service, Clinical Support Service. There are approximately 3,500 births per year at Centenary Hospital for Women and Children, and 700 neonatal admissions to the Unit. The facility offers individualised family centred care in a developmentally appropriate and technologically state-of-the-art environment.
Together with a team of Clinical Development Nurses (CDN) you will support nursing staff in NICU to achieve excellence in clinical practice, standards of care and improved outcomes throughout the patient journey. CDN support and education occurs across morning and evening shifts, seven days a week.
Duties
Under limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Consultant you will deliver high quality, evidence based, patient centred care, to our critically ill patients and their families.
- Facilitate clinical teaching within the workplace for nursing staff and the multidisciplinary team utilising adult learning principles, while following clinical practice standards and policies in a hospital environment.
- Provide orientation and learning programs to meet the individual needs of new staff.
- Promote high quality health outcomes by participating in policy development, education and research within a quality framework.
- Support cultural and organisational change creating a culture of participation in the department.
- Review and evaluate clinical practice identifying staff development needs and undertaking competency assessment.
- Work within current legislative guidelines and appropriately model a commitment to Canberra Health Services’ Values and the provision of a safe working environment.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

- Provide support, guidance, mentoring, preceptorship, role modelling and promote cooperation and collaborative teamwork.
- Provide and update education resources for staff, recipients of healthcare services, carers, and others in consultation.
- Act as a clinical and educational resource within an area based on knowledge, skills, and experience.
- Contribute to the support of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary Qualification or related qualification
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Completed or working towards completing post-graduate qualifications in Neonatal Nursing.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Post graduate qualification in or working towards a higher degree in Education or Cert IV in Training and Assessment is desirable.
Desirable
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or willing to undertake).
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
- A minimum of 4 years post graduate experience working in a NICU.
- Strong organisational skills with a high degree of drive.
- Adaptability and flexibility to accommodate change and provide responsive services to meet patients’ needs.
- An ability to work respectfully in partnership with a range of stakeholders while, simultaneously demonstrating leadership
- Previous experience in clinical teaching and/or contributing to education programs is desirable
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:

- Proven competency in providing advanced neonatal nursing care to babies of varying complexities, including managing critically ill ventilated neonatal patients, with a commitment to ongoing learning of self and others.
- Demonstrated participation in quality improvement activities, the development of evidence-based policy and a commitment to departmental research to improve patient outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment with proven negotiation skills to achieve high quality care and prioritise educational requirements with operational priorities.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
