The Division of Cancer, Ambulatory Support (CAS) provides a comprehensive range of cancer screening, assessment, diagnostic and treatment services and palliative care through inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.

The Walk- in Centres are a nurse-led primary health service that provides episodic care for minor injury and illness to the community. They are part of the national network of Medicare Urgent Care Clinics. The Walk-in Centres are staffed by Advanced Practice Nurses and Nurse Practitioners. Advanced Practice Nurses work within the scope provided by Clinical treatment Protocols (CTP) and Medication Standing Orders (MSO). Nurse Practitioners provide autonomous care to our patients, using advanced clinical assessment skills, experience, and expertise to assess, diagnose and treat patients who present to the WiCs. Nurse Practitioners have a scope of practice which extends beyond the WiC CTP and MSOs enabling them to treat a broader range of conditions. Nurse Practitioners are expected to undertake relevant education and training to demonstrate competence in any expanded scope of practice.

Note: Credentialing through the CHS Nursing and Midwifery Clinical Scope of Practice and Credentialing Committee is mandatory prior to employment as a Nurse Practitioner and the successful candidate/s will be eligible for appointment to an RN 4.2 Nurse Practitioner position/s on evidence of completion of the WiC competency program. Competency is to be met within four weeks and assessed via Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE).

A preliminary temporary Advanced Practice Nurse (RN 3.1) contract will be issued while the WiC competency program is undertaken, and upon successful completion of the OSCEs and CHS credentialling, an RN 4.2 Nurse Practitioner contract will commence.

The successful applicant will work collaboratively and report directly to the Assistant Director of Nursing.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

  1. Provide a comprehensive Nurse Practitioner service, effectively managing the safe clinical care of patients presenting with non-differentiated acute minor illness and/ or injury.
  2. Develop and maintain agreed Walk-in Centre Nurse Practitioner credentialing, including the medication formulary to support the highest level of clinical nursing practice and leadership as an autonomous health professional.
  3. Provide advanced comprehensive and holistic nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning and implementation of treatment, utilising a patient-focussed model of care, which is evidence-based alongside relevant opportunistic health promotion, education, and support to patients to enable their active participation in their care.
  4. Communicate effectively, including liaison and collaboration with other health care professionals and agencies to accept or redirect patients adhering to Walk in Centre Clinical Treatment Protocols.
  5. Participate and provide leadership in the clinical governance and clinical risk management in the Walk in Centre. Including participation in and provision of education, mentoring and clinical leadership to the other staff of the Walk-in Centre.
  6. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Competencies

Specific competencies include but are not limited to the following:

  • Successful completion of the Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE) is to be met within four weeks of commencement and are based on practical demonstration of understanding the Walk-in Centre Clinical Treatment Protocols.
  • Strong organisational skills with a high degree of drive and ability to critically think.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to accommodate change and provide responsive services to meet service and patients’ needs.
  • Provide clinical leadership and guidance, working respectfully in partnership with the Walk-in Centre team and stakeholders.
  • Provide high-level operational and clinical advice to senior management.
  • Assist in formulation and delivery of the areas operational, business and clinical plans and protocols.
  • Capacity to work a rotating roster with weekend, Public Holidays, and evening work.
  • Availability to work across all Walk-in Centre sites.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Be credentialled or eligible for credentialling as a Nurse Practitioner at CHS.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in working across the 5 domains of RN 4.2 Nurse Practitioner Work Level Standards
  • A minimum 5 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:

  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
