The ACT Government is funding a new cancer research centre at Canberra Hospital, which will expand and improve cancer facilities at the Canberra Region Cancer Centre (CRCC).
This will ensure the CRCC is a world-class comprehensive cancer centre providing treatment, research, supportive therapies and emotional support in a single, integrated facility.
The project will fit-out a 449 square metre research centre that is a purpose designed environment able to meet the needs of researchers, patients, and their carers. It will be closely linked to laboratories at the Australian National University (ANU) and be used to facilitate research by clinicians.
The Centre will integrate a research laboratory with cancer clinical trials space, where patients being assessed for clinical trials can be reviewed, and sample collection can be seamlessly co-ordinated with lab technicians.
Designs of the new cancer research centre, which will commence construction in in late 2023 and be completed in late 2024.
Once operating, the research centre will:
- assist in future recruitment of specialist clinicians and academics
- improve access to specialist research through collaboration with organisations such as Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, ANU/John Curtin Medical School, University of Canberra, and the Garvan Institute.
Most importantly, the Project will allow us to translate research-generated evidence into clinical practice and improve the quality of cancer care for our patients.
The cancer research centre is another example of the ACT Government’s commitment to deliver patient-centred care in high quality, modern facilities with exceptional clinical expertise.
