The Division of Surgery is responsible for delivering inpatient and outpatients surgical services The Division includes Surgical Bookings and Pre-Admission Clinic, Anaesthesia, Pain Management Unit, Operating Theatres, Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit, Day Surgery Unit, Admissions, Day Procedure Unit, Endoscopy, and specialist surgical ward areas.
The Perioperative Suite at North Canberra Hospital consists of a Day Surgery Unit, Surgical Admission Lounge (SAL), 7 Operating Theatres, and a procedure room, covering a wide range of surgical specialities, and a Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU).

Our Specialties include Orthopaedics, Obstetrics, Gynaecological, ENT, Head and Neck, Plastics, Minor Vascular, General Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmic and Maxillofacial Surgery. The North Canberra Hospital, Operating Suites service surgical procedures within the area, including referrals from surrounding regions. Our nurses are dynamic skilled professionals who are responsible for the provision of patient centred evidence-based nursing care for every patient. Our nursing teamwork within a multidisciplinary healthcare team supported by the Perioperative Education Team, Clinical Nurse Consultants and the ADON.
A Registered Nurse with advanced nursing practice skills is required to provide a high level of support consistently and competently to perioperative staff and patients within North Canberra Hospital and Canberra Health Services.

The Floor coordinator role reports directly to the Scrub/Scout Clinical Nurse Consultant and joins the nursing leadership team. This position is responsible for facilitating the day-to-day patient flow throughout the perioperative suite, in collaboration with the Perioperative suite management team, while supporting the wider multidisciplinary team to provide evidence- based nursing care to perioperative patients.

Key Responsibilities

Under limited direction of the Scrub/Scout Clinical Nurse Consultant, you will perform as a source of expert nursing knowledge, skills, and attributes. The RNL2 must demonstrate a higher level of skill and the ability to perform a more demanding role covering the domains including clinical care, leadership, education, quality, safety and communication.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • In collaboration with the scrub/ scout CNC and the Perioperative Suite management team, facilitating the day-to-day patient flow throughout the operating theatres by ensuring each patient moves through their surgical experience in a timely fashion, identifying and removing barriers to the process, accessing and utilising services that will enhance and impact on the patient’s progress through the Perioperative environment.
  • Providing leadership for the nursing team in all aspects of clinical practice, professional development and workforce planning to ensure a level of patient care based on ACT Health Policy and the Australian College of Operating Room Nursing (ACORN) standards.
  • Developing and monitoring quality improvement processes inclusive of the National Standards for Quality and Safety in Healthcare within the Perioperative Unit.
  • Contributing to the strategic development of new initiatives within the Perioperative suite.
  • Reviewing and evaluating clinical practice, identifying staff development needs and education strategies required to initiate appropriate change.
  • Developing, communicating and leading a vision of excellence for the standards of patient care within the Perioperative Unit.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications/Experience

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

Essential

  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • The successful applicant must be able to work a full rotational roster inclusive of weekends, evenings and nightshift if required.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working professionally in perioperative environment or similar nursing role.
  • Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

Desirable

  • Prior experience in patient flow coordination role will be highly desirable.
  • Holds or is working towards a tertiary management and/or nursing qualification.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
