Canberra Sexual Health Centre (CSHC) is based at The Canberra Hospital. We provide clinic-based care as well as an outreach program in non-clinical settings. Our clinical care work spans sexual health, with a focus on sexually transmissible infections, HIV and gender affirmation.
We enjoy close links with Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Dermatology colleagues, as well as local non-government organisations.
The Adult Gender Service provides care to adolescents aged 16years and older, and is embedded within the sexual health team.
We have a strong philosophy of teamwork, evidence-based practice and continuing professional development, which is supported by a weekly in-service program.
Note: The position is a 12-month training position and will require the successful applicant to apply for a level 2 position after 12 months.
Key Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Consultant the Registered Nurse within the CSHC is responsible for the provision of assessments, screening, information, education, and referral of patients attending the centre, and those accessing services in outreach settings. Care is provided to patients through face to face and telehealth consultations, working collaboratively with a busy, multidisciplinary team.
- Provide comprehensive nursing services in sexual health and blood borne viruses through assessment, screening, information, education and referral at clinic appointment, via telehealth, and at outreach settings.
- Initiate care for asymptomatic patients within scope of practice, including undertaking contact tracing and the maintenance of STI and BBV databases.
- Management of specimen collection including venepuncture, and the provision of results to patients and other professionals. Provide treatment of STI under standing orders and within national guidelines. Provide immunisations under standing orders and within national guidelines.
- Assist to implement outreach activities (both during and outside of business hours) designed to deliver STI screening and health promotion activities in community settings including recruiting and screening outreach participants, specimen management and record keeping.
- Contribute to quality and safety activities such as MDT meetings, audit, education, training, clinical research, policy development, service redesign, and implement contemporary models of care.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Essential
- Registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Current Driver’s licence required for outreach programs
- Relevant post graduate qualifications – working towards or commitment to undertake Sexual and Reproductive Health Nursing Certificate or equivalent.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- The successful applicant will need to be available for occasional after-hours work.
- Previous nursing experience.
Experience
Essential
- Two (2) years (1978hours) of post graduate hours of practice worked in direct or indirect roles (inclusive of 7 weeks annual leave per year)
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Recent clinical experience in the speciality or other relevant area.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

- Proven knowledge and skills to provide safe nursing practice in community and tertiary health care settings.
- Demonstrated interest and knowledge in STI and BBV specialty nursing with clinical skills to autonomously plan and provide care for asymptomatic patients.
- Commitment to professional development and evidence-based practice within the specialty and commitment to work towards Sexual and Reproductive Health Nursing Certificate or equivalent.
- High level computer literacy including word processing, spreadsheets, and data entry. Experience and competency in the use of electronical medical records.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
