Position Overview
Medical Services at North Canberra Hospital includes three inpatient general medical wards and a Medical Assessment Planning Unit (MAPU) delivering general medical care and speciality services.
The CNE of NCH Medical Stream is responsible for the day-to-day educational management of the 4 wards and a small team of CDN’s. The CNE is to provide expert educational leadership and management within the nursing and multidisciplinary team. The CNE will develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate timely and appropriate education. It is expected that the CNE will promote, incorporate and maintain the National Safety and Quality Health Standards at an educational level.
There is an expectation that the successful applicant/s will maintain accountability for their own practice standards, education and work collaboratively with the North Canberra Hospital team to support the professional development of the NCH Medical Stream nursing workforce.
Duties
Under limited direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing you will maintain Educational Excellence within the North Canberra Hospital Medical Stream.
- Provide educational leadership through the coordination and delivery of training and assessment programs for nursing staff. Provides oversight, direction and guidance for nursing education.
- Coordinate the medical stream CDN team in the approach of regular and monthly targeted education, and provide support to the ward based CDN’s who deliver the ward/staff specific education.
- Develop, implement and evaluate quality evidence based-practice clinical education and assessment processes. Ensure programs meet the National Safety Quality Healthcare Standards education requirements.
- Participate in, and advocate for quality improvement and research in education. Conduct quality projects, reporting, and accreditation projects to analysis performance and develop systematic efforts to improve. Risk manage and benchmark education programs.
- Provide professional and clinical education through role modelling, consultation and communication. Establish and maintain excellent professional relationships within ACT Health, external organisations, professional bodies and other groups as required. Role model effective written, verbal and nonverbal communication processes. Collaborate with the CNC on education needs for staff and performance development.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications
Mandatory
- Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
Desirable
- Post graduate qualifications in nursing, education or related field.
- Recent relevant experience in Education.
- Current driver’s licence.
- Hold Intermediate or Advanced Life Support Certification.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

- Proven experience in clinical education / training in a complex health care environment, evidencing a commitment to and achievement of continuous quality improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement clinical nursing education/training programs utilising contemporary methodologies to enhance knowledge transfer against defined learning objectives.
- Highly developed and effective written and verbal communication skills, with proven interpersonal skills. Ability to lead, develop and maintain networks with internal and external stakeholders identify opportunities to improve education delivery through partnerships and benchmarking.
- Ability to provide accurate reports on training and to set priorities having regard to available resources considering patient experience in developing programs and to work with consumers in the development of programs.
- Demonstrates a commitment to work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience and displays behaviour consistent with Canberra Health Services values of Reliable, Progressive, Respectful and Kind.
