Position Overview

The Peri-Operative Department at North Canberra Hospital consists of a Day Surgery Unit, Surgical Admission Lounge (SAL), 7 Operating Theatres, and a procedure room, covering a wide range of surgical specialities, and a Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU).

Anaesthetic nursing is a diverse and challenging specialty within the Perioperative Unit. Our Specialties include Orthopaedics, Obstetrics, Gynaecological, ENT, Head and Neck, Plastics, Minor Vascular, General Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmic and Maxillofacial Surgery. The North Canberra Hospital, Operating Suite services surgical procedures within the area, including referrals from surrounding regions. Our Anaesthetic Nurses are dynamic skilled professionals who are responsible for the provision of patient centred evidence-based nursing care for every Patient. Our nursing team works within a multidisciplinary healthcare team supported by Perioperative Education Team, and the Clinical Nurse Consultant.

A Registered Nurse with advanced nursing practice skills in the field of Anaesthetic Nursing is required to provide high level support consistently and competently to perioperative patients within North Canberra Hospital and Canberra Health Services.

Anaesthetic RN2 reports directly to the Anaesthetic Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) and join the nursing leadership team. This position is responsible, in collaboration with the other Anaesthetic RN2, supporting Anaesthetic nursing team to provide evidence-based nursing care to perioperative patients.

Duties

The RNL2 must demonstrate a higher level of skill and the ability to perform a more demanding role covering the domains including clinical care, leadership, education, quality, safety and communication. Under limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Consultant you will perform the following duties.

You will:

  1. Demonstrate professional practice as evidence by adhering to AHPRA professional standards, Code of Ethics for Nurses in Australia, ACORN standards and relevant legislative requirements, policy and procedures.
  2. Support the nursing team to provide comprehensive direct patient focused care using evidence-based practice, in accordance with primary health care principles and practices, CHS Policies and Clinical guidelines and the values of CHS
  3. Act as a valued member of the inter-disciplinary team to provide exceptional patient care by actively contributing to team processes and practices.
  4. Provide leadership and promote a commitment to high quality customer service principles, practices, and attributes. Performing in the role of theatre team leader, work closely with patient flow, team leader from other area of perioperative unit to manage the emergency booking and flow.
  5. Foster a learning environment through clinical presentations to support the nursing team with their professional development and maintaining own professional learning and continuous professional development and providing supervision and teaching to peers, New Graduate nurses and students. Report and documents the learning needs of graduates and students to the Anaesthetic CDNs in a timely manner. Actively participates in performing performance appraisals of junior Registered Nurses under the direction of the Anaesthetic Clinical Nurse Coordinator.
  6. Actively participate in and promote a culture of continuous quality improvement that is evidenced based in accordance with the CHS Quality and Clinical Governance Framework. Activities include nursing practice review, quality improvement, clinical research, policy development and review.
  7. Participates in managing and maintaining equipment and supplies under the direction of the perioperative Resource manager. Provides education to Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Medical Staff and Auxiliary Staff on the use, cleaning and maintenance of equipment as required.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Relevant Registration or eligible to register as a Registered Nurse with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) qualifications.
  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience or relevant post graduate qualifications.
  • The successful applicant will be rostered on a 7 day rotating roster which will include weekends and public holidays. The applicant will need to be rostered to work morning, evening and night shift.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
