Position Overview

NCH Pharmacy sits within the Division of Allied Health and Palliative Care and comprises a highly functioning and friendly team of approximately 45 staff – pharmacists, technicians and administration staff.  Currently, the department provides clinical pharmacy services using a complete digital health record to various specialty areas including critical care, emergency care, coronary care, stroke/neurology, general medicine, general surgery, palliative care, maternity, mental health, pre-admission clinic, hospital in the home, as well as dispensary and non-sterile manufacturing services.  We also offer a pharmacy residency program, and a wide range of teaching opportunities. Over the next two years we plan to develop our services to include Partnered Pharmacist Medication Charting (PPMC), enhanced use of technologies and automation, extended scope pharmacy technician roles and further development of the clinical pharmacy workforce. This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate and experienced pharmacist to join our team, work closely with the Director of Pharmacy (DoP), other Lead Pharmacists, and a team of dedicated and skilled pharmacists and technicians to deliver a safe, efficacious and patient-centred service.

Duties

The responsibility of this position is to provide leadership, management, and coordination of the clinical pharmacy service to NCH and CHH, and includes undertaking the responsibilities of the DoP when required.

Under limited direction of the DoP, you will:

  1. Provide leadership, management and support to the Clinical Pharmacist – Education, Training and Workforce Development, Clinical Pharmacy team leaders and the pharmacists within the teams.
  2. Provide strategic management for the clinical pharmacy service including workforce planning, review and assessment of clinical pharmacy services; planning, development and implementation of new, or advanced clinical pharmacy services; and prioritisation and allocation of resources within the clinical pharmacy team.
  3. Proactively develop own knowledge and expertise to serve the functions of the role, including acting as an expert clinical pharmacist, a point of reference for the resolution of complex clinical problems and to assist in resolving any conflict related to clinical care.
  4. Oversee the development, management, delivery and evaluation of current and new educational, training and credentialing programs including, but not limited to, the pharmacy undergraduate training and workplace experience program, the Intern Training Program, the Advanced Pharmacy Australia (AdPha) Residency Programs, as well Restorative Supervision and Orientation of new staff.
  5. Develop and contribute to practice-based research, quality improvement and quality use of medicines initiatives, as well as accreditation activities across the pharmacy department, NCH, CHS and ACT Health.
  6. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Be registered or eligible for registration as a Pharmacist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • At least 7 years hospital pharmacy experience in an Australian public hospital (or similar health system environment) across a wide variety of clinical areas.
  • The successful applicant will need to be available for occasional weekend and after-hours work, including on call, working across hospital sites as necessary.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

  • Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

  • Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.
