Applications are sought for the 2026 clinical year, commencing February 2026 for 12 months with possible extension. To be eligible to apply for this position you must be PGY7+ by February 2026.
The SMR will represent junior medical staff by acting as a representative on committees such as the ACT Network Physician Training Committee. The SMR will assist with BPT recruitment, term allocations and rostering.
The ACT Physician Training Network encompasses the Canberra Hospital, North Canberra Hospital, Goulburn Base Hospital and Sout-Eastern Regional Hospital (Bega). We have over 50 Basic Physician Trainees (BPTs) and over 40 Advanced Trainees in all medical specialties. The Physician Training office is led by the Network Director of Physician Education (NDPE), site Director of Physician Education (DPE), and supported by a Medical Education Support Officer (MESO).
The Senior Medical Registrar (SMR) is an important leadership position in the hospital and will work alongside the Directors of Physician Education and Medical Education Support Officer to deliver a high-quality physician education and training program in line with the RACP curriculum.
The role will be split into an administrative/educational component (0.5FTE) and clinical component (0.5FTE) in a specialty of their choice with the approval of the Unit. The SMR’s clinical duties will be as a supernumerary registrar attached to the relevant specialist adult internal medicine unit. There will be also opportunities for undertaking research and teaching at the ANU Medical School.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Work with the NDPE in recruitment and provision of support for BPTs both in their service roles and in pursuing their educational objectives
- Attend and contribute to Medical Morning Handover
- Represent physician trainees on various Committees including the Physician Training Committee
- Assist implementation of the physician training education and training program that includes:
- Organising the RACP Clinical Examination at Canberra Hospital with the Regional Examiner
- Coordinating the tutorial program for the RACP Written Examination
- Preparing local trainees for the RACP Clinical Examination
- Assist with resolving trainee rostering issues, in conjunction with the Medical Rostering Unit
- Demonstrate commitment to training and continuing professional development including participation in relevant teaching programs, activities, and feedback opportunities, involvement in research, and teaching of junior medical staff and/or medical students.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation

Qualifications
Essential
- Must have an Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
- Have completed at least 48 months of full time equivalent experience in recognised registrar training position and substantially completed fellowship training
Desirable
- Desirably be in final training year of FRACP Advanced Training in Adult Medicine or have received their Fellowship.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering for Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
