Applications are sought for the 2026 clinical year commencing February 2026 for 12 months. To be eligible to apply for this position, applicants must be PGY7+ by February 2026.

Mental Health, Justice Health and Alcohol & Drug Services (MHJHADS) provide health services directly and through partnerships with community organisations. The services provided range of services from prevention and treatment to recovery, maintenance and harm minimisation. Consumer and carer participation is encouraged in all aspects of service planning and delivery. MHJHADS works in partnership with consumers, carers and a range of government and non-government service providers to ensure the best possible outcomes for clients. The Division delivers services at several locations, including hospital inpatient and outpatient settings, community health centres, detention centres, other community settings including people’s homes.

The Senior Registrar position is for one year and is only open to current RANZCP trainees.

All RANZCP Fellowship requirements can be met in the ACT RANZCP Training program, and you will be able to access a RANZCP accredited Formal Education program.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide competent and efficient clinical management of clients of MHJHADS. This includes assessment and management of people presenting to emergency departments, acute admissions, in-patient care, working in the multidisciplinary team, outpatient clinics, interdisciplinary consults to the general hospital, working with clients and their families, therapy where appropriate and clinical handover including clinical documentation.
  • Assist in the ACT RANZCP training program including participation in the relevant teaching program and activities, and involvement in research and quality improvement activities.
  • Demonstrate progress in psychiatry training including participation in the RANZCP education program and activities, timely completion of RANZCP assessments and involvement in research.
  • Support the psychiatry registrar cohort including seeking feedback and be available as a first point of contact for registrars when necessary.
  • Liaise with TCH Medical Officer Support Unit and MHJHADS rostering teams regarding Registrar rosters.
  • Participate in the supervision, training, and professional development of junior medical staff and medical students.
  • Participate in the ECT and on-call rosters.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation

Qualifications

Essential

  • Must have an Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
  • You are required to be a current RANZCP trainee.
  • Has completed at least 48 months of full-time equivalent experience in recognised registrar training position substantially completed fellowship training
  • Must be at least PGY7 by February 2026

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

  2. Proven high-level communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to provide leadership while working as a team member in a multidisciplinary environment.
  3. Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching at all levels including medical and multidisciplinary staff, and evidence of prior experience in teaching.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development, including RANZCP formal education and self-directed learning.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
