Volunteers are vital to our services and make a difference to the care our patients and consumers receive.

We match volunteers with meaningful and fulfilling roles, which draw on their diverse range of skills, experience and interests.

North Canberra Hospital has a range of programs and activities that enhance the care and wellbeing of our patients by supporting their social and emotional health. Volunteers also provide practical support to patients, visitors and staff.

Volunteer activities include:

  • social support for patients
  • guides to help visitors
  • meal assistance
  • recreational group activities for patients
  • library service
  • Justice of the Peace
  • emergency clothing supply
  • Hand and foot massage
  • Administration

Application and onboarding

To volunteer at North Canberra Hospital, you need to be over the age of 18 years and complete the following:

  • complete the Volunteer Application Form
  • attend an informal selection interview (this is an opportunity for the Volunteer Services Manager to explain the programs and services, discuss which role is right for you, answer any questions and discuss next steps)
  • provide 2 referees
  • provide a copy of Working With Vulnerable People Card
  • undergo a National Police Check (which is processed and paid for by Canberra Health Services)
  • vaccination screening program to ensure vaccinations are up-to-date (we can provide free vaccinations if required)
  • attend a 2.5 hours Volunteer Orientation Session and any role specific training
  • sign a Code of Conduct, Volunteer Agreement and Position Description

We hold a volunteer orientation session for all new volunteers which includes information on:

  • communicating with and supporting patients
  • professional conduct
  • infection prevention and control
  • loss and grief
  • child protection
  • work health and safety, including emergency procedures, fire procedures and manual tasks

After the application process and training, volunteers begin their regular shifts. Each shift is approximately 1 to 3 hours long, on week days only. We ask people to volunteer regularly (e.g. weekly) and to make a minimum 12 month commitment to volunteering.

Support

All volunteers are provided with initial and ongoing support to ensure that they are comfortable and confident in their role, and that they find it fulfilling, rewarding and enjoyable.
