We provide outpatient nutrition counselling appointments to patients of all ages for a number of different conditions. Nutrition advice can help you live a healthier life with medical conditions.
About this service
Our dietitians provide the following services:
- Assessing your nutritional needs.
- Providing personalised food and eating advice that considers your medical conditions and personal circumstances.
- Providing advice on alternative sources of nutrition where required, such as nutrition supplements, tube feeding (enteral nutrition) or feeding via vein (TPN)
We offer both face-to-face and telephone appointments and see people in the following clinics.
- Paediatric Nutrition clinic: for babies and children with complex nutrition needs.
- Cystic Fibrosis: help from doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals to manage this condition.
- School age Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) Clinic: for school aged children who require tube feeding.
- Paediatric Allergy Clinic: for children with multiple food allergies or intolerances or anaphylaxis to food.
- Adult Allergy Clinic: for adults with food allergies or intolerances.
- Pre-admission surgical clinic: for adults who require dietary advice and support to optimise nutrition prior to surgery.
- Coeliac education group: for people newly diagnosed with Coeliac disease.
- Children’s Feeding Clinic: for babies and children with complex feeding issues and growth concerns needing input from both a speech pathologist and a dietitian.
- Gastroenterology Clinic: specialised service for the management of adults under the care of a gastroenterologist.
- Adult Cystic Fibrosis Multidisciplinary Clinic: help from doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals to manage this condition.
- Sleep Apnoea Nutrition Clinic: weight management clinic for adults with sleep apnoea under the care of the respiratory sleep clinic.
- Renal Nutrition Clinic: for adults with renal failure and receiving Peritoneal Dialysis or Home Haemodialysis.
- Falls Prevention Assessment Clinic: provided through the Brindabella Day and Ambulatory Rehabilitation Service for older adults who are at risk of falls.
- Motor Neuron Disease Clinic: provided through the Brindabella Day and Ambulatory Rehabilitation Service for people living with Motor Neuron Disease.
Who we care for
Our services are available for people who fit the criteria for the clinics listed above.
If your condition isn’t listed here, you may be eligible to see a dietitian through:
- Our Community Care Nutrition Service for ACT residents over the age of 25, or ACT residents from 18 years of age if they require support for tube feeding or with advanced kidney disease.
- Our Women, Youth and Children Nutrition Service for women during pregnancy and up to two years after giving birth; as well as children and young people from birth to 25 years of age.
Our services are free if you have a Medicare Card or an Asylum Seeker Card.

Referrals for the Children’s Feeding Clinic are coordinated by our Speech Pathology Service.
What to expect
We offer appointments based on the urgency of your condition and availability of dietitians.
We will contact you to book your appointment. If you have opted in, you will receive an SMS reminder before your appointment.
What to bring to your appointment
- Medicare card
- Any letters or correspondence from your GP
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
- Your child’s personal health record (Blue Book)
Where we’re located
- We see surgical patients in the Pre-admission clinic in Building 12, Canberra Hospital.
- Adult Cystic Fibrosis Multidisciplinary clinic is held in Level 8 of the Main building, Canberra Hospital.
- Falls Prevention Assessment Clinic is held at either University of Canberra Hospital (UCH), Brindabella Day and Ambulatory Rehabilitation Services or Tuggeranong Community Health Centre.
- Motor Neuron Disease Clinic is held at University of Canberra Hospital (UCH), Brindabella Day and Ambulatory Rehabilitation Services.
These clinics are held in Paediatric Outpatients, Level 1, Centenary Hospital for Women and Children
