All children are offered a Kindergarten Health Check in their first year of primary school. The aim of this program is to:
- promote child health and wellbeing, and
- help identify children with potential health problems that may affect their ability to learn.
About this service
Our Kindergarten Health Check includes:
- a physical health check provided by School Health Registered Nurses. This includes vision, hearing, height, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI). This is completed at your child’s school.
- a questionnaire completed by you, your child’s parent or carer.
You will be sent a letter with the results after the physical health check.
We will let you know if we think your child will benefit from further assessment or referral to other services.
The hearing and vision results are only provided to your child’s teacher if you consent.
Your GP will also receive a copy of the results if you consent.
We will send the results of the questionnaire to your child’s GP if you give permission for us to do so. Your GP will be able to discuss follow-up or further assessment, if needed.
Who we care for
Our service is available to all students currently in kindergarten who attend an ACT primary school.
How to access this service
If your child is in kindergarten, you can expect to receive an information pack from your child’s school at the start of the school year. This pack includes information about the Kindergarten Health check and consent.
If you require any further information, please contact the School Health Team on (02) 5124 1585.
What to expect
We will visit your child at school to complete their Kindergarten Health Check.
If your child is absent from school on the day the health checks are performed, you will be invited to a ‘catch-up’ clinic. You will receive a letter in the post with information on how to book into this clinic. These clinics are held regularly during the school term. You or a nominated carer must attend this clinic with your child.
Where we’re located
This service is provided in all ACT primary schools.
The ‘catch up’ clinics are booked appointments held at City Community Health Centre.
