We offer physiotherapy to people with bleeding disorders such as haemophilia, Von Willebrand’s Disease and other rare bleeding disorders.

About this service

We work as part of the Haemophilia Treatment Centre team which also includes specialist doctors and nurses.

We can help care for a joint or muscle after you have had a new bleed into the area, as part of your treatment plan from your doctor.

We also offer testing of joints to children with haemophilia, such as the Haemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS).

Who we care for

Our service is available to people with a new joint or muscle bleed, or for testing of joints in children (HJHS) as part of your treating team.

This can include both people in hospital, and in the community.

These services are free if you have a Medicare card.

If you have a bleeding disorder and are experiencing a joint or muscle problem not related to a new bleed, eg, sporting injuries, long term problems or pain, you can see our Community Care Physiotherapy team.

How to access this service

Your Haemophilia Treatment Centre team will organise for you to access this service.

If you are in hospital because of a joint or muscle bleed, a physiotherapist may see you during your stay.

If you want to check on your outpatient referral, please contact us between 8am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) on the information below.

If you are in hospital and wish to discuss your referral, please talk to your doctor or nurse.

What to expect

Once you are referred to physiotherapy by your doctor or nurse, we will triage your referral and call you for an appointment. Please let our reception staff know if you need a letter or reminder about the appointment.

Sometimes we will see you at once on referral, or while you are in hospital having treatment.

At your appointment, we will ask you some questions related to your health and have a look your muscle or joint.

We will usually then take some measurements, for example of swelling and movement.

We can then make a treatment plan with you, and book further appointments as needed.

Please wear loose fitting clothing so we can see the muscle or joint that is injured.

What to bring to your appointment
