The cardiac rehabilitation program is a six-week course to assist people with cardiovascular disease to return to an active and rewarding life.

About this service

We provide services that help people with heart disease return to an active and satisfying life and to prevent recurrence of cardiac events.

We help you to take better control of your health and:

  • Reduce the risk of further heart problems
  • Learn how to exercise for a healthy heart and get stronger
  • Feel better, faster recovery – emotionally and physically
  • Learn how to reduce stress
  • Become more confident
  • Return to your former social and work activities.

Who we care for

Anyone who has had a heart attack, coronary artery stenting and/or heart surgery.

People living in the north of Canberra area are invited to participate in the Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

What to expect

Cardiac Rehabilitation begins from the moment you are admitted to hospital and continues beyond discharge to your recovery.

It helps you make an effective recovery by providing exercise, education and advice that involves input from Doctors, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Dietitians, Social Workers and patient volunteers.

We will teach you about:

  • Understanding heart disease
  • Understanding medications and how they work and the long term benefits for your heart
  • Healthy eating
  • Stress management
  • Returning to work, sport and leisure activities
  • Managing issues such as stress and depression, and their relationship to heart disease

You will be assessed by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse and Physiotherapists before being given an individualised education and exercise program which is tailored to provide support and improve recovery.

You will attend sessions once a week for six weeks. Session times are:

  • Monday: 8am – 3.30pm: Assessments
  • Tuesday: 11am – 12pm: Gym
  • Tuesday: 1.30pm – 2.30pm: Gym
  • Wednesday: 9am – 11am: Education
  • Thursday: 11am – 12pm: Gym
  • Thursday: 1.30pm – 2.30pm: Gym
  • Friday: 8am – 3.30pm: Assessments

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Any letters or correspondence from your GP
  • Medicines you need to take while you are here
  • List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have brought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
  • Previous x-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
