Babies who are born prematurely or who are sick might need to be cared for in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or in the Special Care Nursery (SCN). Specialised teams of doctors and nurses will provide your newborn with around the clock care.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is at Centenary Hospital for Women and Children.

We have Special Care Nurseries at Centenary Hospital for Women and Children and North Canberra Hospital.

A family spend time with their baby in the neonatal Intensive Care Unit

When your baby is admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Special Care Nursery we will meet with you to talk about their condition and how you can help with your baby’s care.

We understand that your baby’s stay in the unit can be an anxious and stressful time for you and your family. Parents are welcome in the unit and we will provide you with information and education about your baby’s treatment and development while they are here.

Our mission is to provide exceptional health care for all babies. To do this we work with you so that together we can provide baby with family centred care. This means providing every opportunity for you and your family to bond and care for your baby. We encourage you to participate in our family centred rounds.

It can be difficult to know what to bring, where to park and how to find your way around Centenary Hospital or North Canberra Hospital. Use our guide to help you during your stay at Centenary Hospital.
