It’s important that you tell us if you, or the person you are visiting, is getting sicker.

It may be that something is ‘not quite right’. This might be a change in how you feel, look or behave. A family member or carer may notice these types of changes before it is obvious to us.

Getting sicker might include, but is not limited to:

  • finding it harder to breathe than normal
  • feeling like your heart is racing
  • feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • new or worse confusion
  • pain that is worse despite medication
  • any new symptoms.

If you are getting sicker you should take the following steps.

If you’re staying at North Canberra Hospital:

  1. Press your nurse call bell and tell your nurse or midwife why you’re worried.
  2. If you are still worried, ask to speak with the nurse or midwife in charge.
  3. If, after taking these steps, you feel you need urgent assistance, call (02) 6201 6717 and a senior nurse will assess your condition and assist as required.
