By now you should know that we are expanding the Canberra Hospital to deliver more emergency, surgical and critical care capacity for the ACT and surrounding region.
But just how much do you know about the incredible lengths our Campus Modernisation Team (in partnership with Major Projects Canberra, Multiplex, and the broader IHSS division) has gone to in order to ensure that the centrepiece of this project -the 43,000sqm Critical Services Building (CSB) – is a shining example of sustainability?
In a world-leading climate action initiative, and an Australian first, our new emergency and critical care facility will be an all-electric building, helping to minimise the carbon footprint of Canberra Hospital. It will also improve our hospital’s green star rating and support the ACT’s nation-leading target of net zero emissions by 2045.
Once operational, this initiative will mitigate the release of an estimated 1,886 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year; the equivalent of taking 760 cars off Canberra roads annually.
‘This building is really quite remarkable in terms of how it supports the ACT Government in realising its sustainability agenda,’ said Vanessa Brady, Program Director of our Canberra Hospital Campus Modernisation Program.
Hospitals are big consumers of energy and resources; and generate significant amounts of waste. What can we do to offset that?’
As well as being 100 percent fuelled by renewable energy, the Campus Hospital Expansion will also:
- retrofit existing buildings that currently have carbon emitting building systems
- transition fleet vehicles to electric vehicles
- increase soft landscaping across the Campus to improve permeability, cool the Campus and reduce heat island effect
- increase canopy cover beyond the ACT Government 30 percent target
- improve the open space network to support sustainable behaviour on Campus by supporting walking and active modes of transport
- consider and respond to the impacts of climate change and weather events in building designs.
