Urology covers the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs.

About this service

We provide diagnostic services including:

  • consultation
  • biopsy of the prostate, and
  • flexible cystoscopy (a procedure that uses a flexible tube and camera to check for any problems with your bladder).

We usually perform procedures for benign conditions endoscopically (sometimes called ‘key hole’ surgery).

We treat cancers of the kidney, ureters, bladder, prostate, testicles and penis through:

  • open surgery
  • laparoscopic surgery (a minimally invasive procedure where we can view and operate on organs in your abdominal (belly) or pelvic cavities), and
  • endoscopic procedures (a minimally invasive procedure where a flexible tube with a lens is inserted into your body so we can see inside your body).

We treat cancers as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes urologists, oncologists and radiation oncologists.

Care may include multiple urologists, urology registrars (training urologists) and junior doctors.

Major procedures are done at Canberra Hospital and minor procedures through North Canberra Hospital surgical services.

Who we care for

We care for people referred by a General Practitioner or specialist, Canberra Hospital Emergency Department or a Canberra Hospital ward after admission.

How to access this service

Services are accessed through a referral from a General Practitioner or specialist.

What to expect

There is high demand for public surgical outpatient services.

We assess all referrals against clinical criteria which is available for referring medical officers. If your condition meets this criteria, you will be offered an appointment.

We encourage you to talk to your General Practitioner about the most appropriate care for your condition.

We aim to triage your referral within five days of receiving it.

We will send you a letter to confirm you are on the waiting list, and we will contact you when an appointment is available.

At your appointment, you will be reviewed by one of our Urologists to assess whether you are suitable for urological surgery.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Any letters or correspondence from your General Practitioner
  • Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it)
  • List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
  • Previous x-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
