What is a throne accessory?

A throne accessory is a toilet handrail system that fits securely onto your existing toilet. It provides stability and support when getting on and off the toilet.

The handrails can be set in an upright position or in a wider more open position. A handrail can also be folded down for wheelchair users to transfer onto and off the toilet.

A spacer can also be fitted underneath the throne accessory if you need extra height.

How to set up the throne accessory

• The throne accessory is fitted under your existing toilet seat.
• Remove the existing toilet seat by unscrewing it. If your toilet seat does not come off with screws that are accessible at the bottom of the ceramic, this equipment is unlikely to work.
• Place the throne accessory on top of the toilet bowl. Line up the slots over the screw holes at the rear of the toilet bowl.
• Tighten the side positioning bolts evenly to each side of the toilet bowl.
• Replace the existing toilet seat over the throne accessory and use the same screws to hold them in place.
• To fold down the handrail press the spring-loaded button and turn it.
• To change the handrail angle from an upright to an open position the handrails need to be removed and put on the opposite side. Press the spring-loaded button and pull the handrails out, place them on the other side and secure when the button locks into the hole.
• Use two hands on the handrails to lower yourself down and to push up to stand from the toilet.

Precautions

• If there is a large gap between the toilet bowl and a plastic toilet seat when the throne accessory is fitted, there is a risk your skin can be pinched if the toilet seat bends. You can place a rubber pad under the front of the toilet seat to stop it bending, also known as a buffer or bumper.

Care and maintenance

• Clean weekly with warm, soapy water and a cloth. Dry with a clean cloth to stop corrosion.
• Check fortnightly for rust or corrosion on any parts, and that the fastening screws and and side positioning bolts are tight and secure against the bowl. Check that the handrails do not move when pressure and weight are applied.
• If your throne accessory becomes damaged or has a fault, stop using it and contact the Equipment Loan Service.
