Why am I having this test?

Your doctor has requested this test to check your kidney’s ability to filter proteins and albumin (your most important blood protein). This collection is important as it allows us to measure your total kidney output of albumin. The results from this test will help your doctor in making a diagnosis or in monitoring therapy.

How do you collect the urine overnight?

If you were not given a collection bottle by your doctor or clinic, you can pick one up for free from any ACT Pathology collection centre.

The container has instructions on the label. Please follow them closely.

What do you do?

• Before going to bed go to the toilet and empty your bladder. Do not collect this sample into the container.
• Record the time (to the nearest minute) and date in the space on the container label marked ‘start time’ (e.g. 11:30pm on 12/04/2020).
• The next time you empty your bladder collect all of your urine and put it into the bottle provided. If necessary, your urine may be first collected into any clean container (like a jug or ice-cream container) and then poured into bottle provided taking care not to spill any of the specimen.
• If you urinate overnight more than once, please collect all your urine into the container provided. Continue to collect all your urine into the sample bottle for at least the next 8 hours, longer is fine.
• After the final collection, note the time (to the nearest minute) and date in the space on the container label marked ‘finish time’ (e.g. 7:30am 13/04/2020).
• Write your full name (first and last names), date of birth and postcode on the label of the container.
• Bring the container and request form to one of our collection centres listed below, as soon as possible.
