Canberra Health Services Dental (CHS Dental) within the Division of Rehabilitation, Aged and Community Services (RACS) provides adult, child and youth general dental, restorative, additional needs, General Anaesthetic (GA), Relative Analgesia (RA), and specialist Surgical and Orthodontic services to the eligible members of the ACT community. The service currently operates from five Community Health Centres and three hospitals across the ACT region, as well as operating within ACT corrective services and from mobile dental clinics as below:
- Gungahlin Community Health Centre – Six dental chairs
- Belconnen Community Health Centre – Eleven dental chairs
- City Community Health Centre - Ten dental chairs
- Phillip Community Health Centre - Ten dental chairs; and
- Tuggeranong Community Health Centre - Five chairs.

- The Canberra Hospital (GA)
- North Canberra Hospital (GA)
- Calvary John James Hospital (GA)
- Nursing home mobile dental clinic
- School mobile dental clinic
- Targeted Access Program mobile dental clinic
CHS Dental is a multidisciplinary program and consists of dentists, visiting oral surgeons, oral health therapists, dental therapists, prosthetists, visiting orthodontist, dental assistants, laboratory technicians and administrative staff. CHS Dental offers a range of dental services to the eligible members of the community for adult & child and youth dental services, this includes denture services and emergency dental.
The services are available Monday to Friday, from 8:30am to 5:00pm at the above listed facilities and Community Health Centres.
Part time positions with a minimum roster of 3 business days per week are available.
The position holder is expected to operate within the Public Sector Management Act (1994), the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct and the professional requirements specified by the Dental Board of Australia.
Key responsibilities
Under limited direction of the Senior Dental Officer, you will:
- Provide dental services to eligible clients across all CHS Dental service delivery locations, these locations include the Belconnen Health Centre, Civic Health Centre, Phillip Health Centre, Tuggeranong Health Centre, Gungahlin Health Centre, Hume Health Centre within the Alexander Maconochie Centre and the CHS Dental Mobile Dental Clinics, as well as the major Canberra public hospitals.
- Undertake examination, diagnosis and dental treatment for clients within the approved scope of clinical practice and consult with and provide advice to other professional staff
- Plan and participate in Quality Improvement programs to ensure the highest clinical standards.
- Participate in continuing professional development, performance appraisal and development.
- Provide clinical supervision to trainee Dental Assistants and Dental Students.
- Provide preventive care, oral health education and instruction.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications and Experience
Mandatory
- Possession of a recognised Degree in Dental Surgery or Dental Science.
- Ability to be hold a radiation license within ACT
- Be registered or be eligible for registration as a Dentist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Demonstrated minimum of four years clinical experience working as an AHPRA registered Dentist.
- Demonstrated experience working as a sole dental clinician within a single chair dental clinic.
Desirable
- Scope and experience providing dental treatment to Additional Needs clients,
- Scope and experience providing dental treatment to clients who are under general anaesthetic
- Current driver’s license
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) and Australian Council of Healthcare Standards (ACHS) clinical indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care and all other related frameworks
Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:
- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
- Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC) credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for medical and Dental professionals.

- Approval for second job will need to be submitted annually. Commitment to second job must not impact on the agreed clinical duties of the specialist at Canberra Hospital.
CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

- Demonstrated experience working as a sole dental clinician in a single chair dental clinic along with a minimum of four years experience working as an AHPRA registered dentist.
- Ability to work within the CHS Dental policies such as infection control and to participate in accreditation and quality improvement activities.
- Knowledge and understanding of the provision of dental care in a public health setting, community participation, and client rights.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary primary health care delivery team.

This 44,000sqm, nine-storey facility, the largest healthcare infrastructure project in the Territory’s history, delivers cutting-edge acute clinical services. Building 5 seamlessly integrates with existing campus buildings, ensuring smooth public access, patient transportation, and efficient logistics.
North Canberra Hospital - As of 3 July 2023 Calvary Public Hospital Bruce transitioned to CHS and became North Canberra Hospital. The transition will deliver a health system networked under one provider and will provide increased workforce opportunities for staff at both CHS sites. The ACT Government will be building a new northside hospital on the existing hospital campus in Bruce to meet the growing health care needs of our community, with construction to commence mid-decade providing more beds, increased services, and increased career opportunities.
