The Division of Women, Youth and Children (WYC) provides a broad range of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare services. Service provision is based on a family-centred, interdisciplinary approach to care, in partnership with consumers and other service providers.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Canberra Hospital provides tertiary level obstetrics and gynaecological services to the ACT and surrounding regions. The Centenary Hospital for Women and Children has more than 3700 births per year and is a level 6 referral centre for high-risk pregnancies for the region.
As a Career Medical Officer, you will be a collaborative clinical specialist with demonstrated commitment to providing exceptional and safe healthcare. You will a critical member of the O&G Team and contribute to a progressive service.
It is expected that you are a registered medical practitioner; and has had at least three years’ post graduate experience in public hospital service.
You will have excellent communication skills with the ability to interact sensitively and holistically with women experiencing complex pain. You will be required to work as a member of the multidisciplinary team with proven experience to develop and maintain credible, respectful and collaborative professional relationships. You will also bring specialised clinical capabilities to contribute to research opportunities within this field and cultivate a positive workplace culture.
The position holder is expected to operate within the Public Sector Management Act (1994), the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct and the professional requirements specified by the appointee’s Specialist College.
Duties
Under limited direction of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Medical Unit Director you will perform the following roles. You will:
- Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of Canberra Health Services under the supervision and direction of Consultant Medical Practitioners. This includes acute admissions, inpatient care, outpatient clinics, inter-disciplinary consults and clinical handover.
- Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff, nursing and midwifery staff.
Communicate and collaborate within the multidisciplinary clinical team. - Demonstrate progress in training in the specialty including participation in the relevant teaching program and activities, and involvement in research.
- Participate in the after-hours and on-call roster.
- Contribute to clinical audit and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care.
- Maintain adequate and legible medical record and ensure that the clinical team completes discharge summaries in a timely manner.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements/ Qualifications
To be successful in this position, it is expected that the successful candidate will have the following attributes:
- Relevant registration or be eligible for registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- A minimum of 4 years of experience as a Career Medical Officer or equivalent
- Proven performance in both undergraduate and postgraduate general practice education is mandatory.
- The successful applicant will need to be available for occasional weekend and after-hours work.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering for Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:
- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
- Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for medical professionals.

This 44,000sqm, nine-storey facility, the largest healthcare infrastructure project in the Territory’s history, delivers cutting-edge acute clinical services. Building 5 seamlessly integrates with existing campus buildings, ensuring smooth public access, patient transportation, and efficient logistics.
North Canberra Hospital - As of 3 July 2023 Calvary Public Hospital Bruce transitioned to CHS and became North Canberra Hospital. The transition will deliver a health system networked under one provider and will provide increased workforce opportunities for staff at both CHS sites. The ACT Government will be building a new northside hospital on the existing hospital campus in Bruce to meet the growing health care needs of our community, with construction to commence mid-decade providing more beds, increased services, and increased career opportunities.
