Canberra Health Services and North Canberra Hospital are seeking passionate and dedicated Registered Midwives to join our Women and Children Divisions, which provide comprehensive maternity, neonatal, and gynaecology services to women and families across the ACT and surrounding regions. These services include antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, neonatal special care, domiciliary care, and gynaecology support, delivered by a multidisciplinary team of midwives, nurses, medical staff, and allied health professionals.
As a Registered Midwife Level 1, you will be responsible for delivering safe, evidence-based midwifery care in a supportive and collaborative environment. You will possess strong clinical problem-solving skills, demonstrate sound interpersonal and communication abilities, and take ownership of your professional development. You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team and stakeholders to ensure woman-centred care that respects choice, continuity, and cultural safety. Your role will include liaising with managers regarding service needs and contributing to the ongoing improvement of care delivery.
Centenary Hospital for Women and Children (CHWC), a Level 6 tertiary centre, provides specialised maternity, neonatology, and paediatric services to approximately 3,800 women annually. CHWC is part of Canberra Health Services, which also includes Canberra Hospital and the University of Canberra Hospital. The maternity department at CHWC is dynamic and innovative, offering a range of care models including midwifery-led continuity programs, team care, and collaborative multidisciplinary approaches. Maternity services are supported by tertiary neonatal care including NICU, SCN, and the ACT NETS regional retrieval service.
At North Canberra Hospital, the Women and Children Division focuses on providing high-quality maternity, neonatal, and gynaecology services, with a strong emphasis on family-centred care. Registered Midwives are integral to the delivery and management of care, working across antenatal, birthing, postnatal, and neonatal areas.

Key responsibilities
Under limited direction of your manager, you will perform duties as a Registered Nurse Level 1 in the CHS service. You will:
- Co-ordinate and provide midwifery care in accordance with Canberra Health Services Policies and Procedures, National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral and the relevant legislation.
- Practice in a way that acknowledges the dignity, culture, values, beliefs, and rights of individuals and/or groups.
- Promote midwives within the multidisciplinary team as valuable experts contributing to positive outcomes for women and their families.
- Understand and practice within own scope of clinical practice.
- Promote an environment that encourages both individual and team development.
- Maintain competence, including mandatory education and assessment; participate in the development of policy, procedures, quality activities and clinical meetings.
- Participate and encourage an environment of active lifelong learning.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary Qualification or related qualification in midwifery
- Registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A minimum 1 years’ experience as Registered Midwife in acute care setting
Desirable
- Prior experience in an acute or subacute hospital setting will be highly desirable
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
- Driver’s License
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.

- Work a full rotating roster (morning, evening, night shifts) and be available for weekend and after-hours work.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
