Position overview

University of Canberra Hospital (UCH) is the ACT's first sub-acute rehabilitation hospital on the grounds of the University of Canberra (UC) and is part of the CHS's planned network of health facilities designed to meet the needs of our ageing and growing population.

The UCH is a 140 bed sub- acute rehabilitation hospital providing inpatient rehabilitation, aged care rehabilitation, mental health rehabilitation and outpatient and community-based rehabilitation services. actions and remains accountable in providing patient care.

This position is based at UCH and is responsible for clinical coordination after hours across all wards. The After-Hours Clinical Nurse Coordinator (AHCNC) plays an integral role in the first medical response team (Hospital Emergency Response Officers, HEROs).

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Manage the clinical area with respect to the safety, appropriateness and efficiency of patient care, with particular attention to patient deterioration situations.
  • Manage and lead UCH emergency responses as a member of the Hospital Emergency Response Officers (HERO) team. Including collaboration with the medical officers and providing leadership to staff in a medical emergency
  • Ensure initial and timely investigation, management, and reporting of adverse events after hours. Work closely with the After-Hours Hospital Manager to maintain effective patient flow across the service
  • Provide leadership and support for situations where conflict arises between staff, patients, family and members of the public
  • Provide clinical governance, leadership and participate in the development and implementation of appropriate policies and guidelines, which align with the National Safety and Quality Health Care Standards
  • Provide educational through the coordination and delivery of training and assessment programs for nursing staff.
  • Participate in, and advocate for, quality improvement and research in clinical practice.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Specific experience includes but is not limited to the following.

Essential

  • Five (5) years (8550 hours) post graduate hours of practice worked in direct or indirect roles (inclusive of 7 weeks annual leave per year)
  • Or
  • Completion of a relevant post graduate certificate and four (4) years (6840 hours) worked in direct or indirect roles
  • Prior experience in acute and/or Rehab nursing.

Desirable

Prior to commencement

  • Pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
