Position overview
The Department of Neonatology is the only tertiary level 6 neonatal unit in the ACT and surrounding NSW. It includes the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), SCN, NETS ACT retrieval service, Newborn and Parent Support Service, and NICU Growth and Development Clinic.
NICU and SCN have 36 funded beds. There are approximately 3,500 births per year in CHWC, and 700 neonatal admissions to the Unit. The facility offers individualised family centered care in a developmentally appropriate and technologically state-of-the-art environment.
This position is available for a Registered Nurse, with prior neonatal nursing experience and relevant post-graduate qualifications, to be employed in SCN.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Under limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager, to perform the role of Registered Nurse Level 2 SCN You will:
- Provide advanced nursing care consistently and competently for patients of varying complexity in SCN, whilst working within the boundaries of professional legislation and existing policies and procedures.
- Support education within the Department of Neonatology, including facilitating clinical teaching aligned with clinical practice standards and guidelines, and preceptorship of new and less experienced staff.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately (orally, non-verbally and in writing) in a diverse range of situations, with the multidisciplinary team, using consistent and transparent processes.
- Provide clinical leadership, critical analysis and problem-solving skills, to facilitate effective patient care and evaluate outcomes of own practice.
- Support cultural and organisational change creating a culture of participation in the department and work in partnership with families.
- Support safe and evidence-based practice within neonatology through: Promotion of evidence-based practice ; Contribution to research and/or promotion of the utilisation of research as a source of learning and innovation within the specialty; Collaboration with peers; Regular contribution to the development and review of policy; Quality improvement initiatives.
- Work within current legislative guidelines and appropriate model a commitment to Canberra Health Service Values and the provision of a safe working environment.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
Competencies
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
- Provide direct and indirect neonatal nursing care in SCN, engage in reflective and analytical practice, and demonstrate professional and collaborative practice.

- Actively contribute to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and healthcare delivery.

- Understand and apply obligations for risk identification and safe practice within the clinical practice environment under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act 2011.
Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A tertiary qualification in nursing.
- Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Completion (or working towards completion) of post-graduate qualifications in Neonatal Special Care or Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential
- A minimum of four years full-time equivalent post registration working in a neonatal unit.
- Ability to work a rotating 7 day a week roster which includes weekends and nights.
Desirable
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.

- Demonstrated ability to support education in the clinical area, and a proven commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Demonstrated participation in quality improvement activities, the development of evidence-based policy and a commitment to departmental research to improve patient outcomes in SCN.
- Demonstrated understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behavior consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
