Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited direction of the Team Manager, Custodial Mental Health, you will be responsible for overseeing the clinical activities of Custodial Mental Health including the Assertive Response Team (ART) and the Clinical Management team at both the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) and Bimberi Youth Justice Centre (BYJC). You will be responsible for the day-to-day prioritising and allocation of clinical activities within resource constraints, compliance with policies and procedures in relation to clinical activities, clinical liaison with partner agencies, and supporting the Team Manager in areas of clinical governance, data management, and quality improvement. You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with a team of clinical staff of nursing, medical, and allied health professionals, as well as a range of external agencies including JHS Custodial Health, community and inpatient mental health services, ACT Corrective Services, CYPS, and external agencies such as NGO’s.

At this level you will be expected to have advanced clinical skills, a thorough knowledge of relevant policies, procedures and reporting requirements, and that you will contribute to quality and safety initiatives.

You will be supported to engage actively in clinical supervision and provided with opportunities for professional development and training.

You will:

1. Provide clinical expertise in mental health nursing assessment and intervention to ensure appropriate and responsive mental health care to a specialised client group/s in a custodial setting, and across the lifespan.
2. Monitor, prioritise and co-ordinate the daily clinical activities of CMH, handover, multidisciplinary meetings and clinical care reviews.
3. Provide collaborative leadership to clinical staff and students; and support and drive staff participation in mandatory tasks, orientation programs, professional development and other training activities.
4. Communicate with influence on clinical matters and be effective in mediating and resolving conflicts.
5. Actively participate in the development and review of operating procedures as well as participating in program evaluation and monitoring, quality improvement projects, research programs, and health promotion programs.
6. Develop and foster an environment which is physically safe, non-judgmental, culturally sensitive, responsive to feedback and promotes high quality customer service. Appropriately model and promote commitment to the organisation’s values.
7. Develop and maintain liaison, consultation and education relationships with other government and non-government agencies, families and carers
8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
