Position overview

The Central Outpatient (COP) unit at Canberra Hospital sits within the Division of Cancer and Ambulatory Support (CAS), providing clinic-based care to a wide variety of medical and surgical specialties. Nursing staff work across medical and surgical services including neurology, neurosurgery, endocrinology, general medicine, general surgery, rheumatology, dermatology, infectious diseases, orthopaedics, plastics, vascular, urology, ear nose & throat and oral and maxillofacial.

The level 1 Registered Nurse will work across the four main areas of the COPD, inclusive of the Central Outpatient clinic, Registrar Review clinic, Fracture clinic and Ear, Nose, Throat & Oral Maxillofacial clinics. These clinics are fast paced with a high turnaround of patients, requiring excellent communication skills to work in concordance with the multidisciplinary team.

The clinics primarily run from Monday to Friday from 0800 – 1800.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and under the direct supervision of the clinic team leaders, deliver clinical care across the COPD clinic areas.
  • With a multidisciplinary approach, ensure clinical care is of the highest quality, consistent with current evidence and practice initiatives in the relevant area of speciality.
  • Effectively communicate with consumers and health professionals using well developed verbal, written and technological skills. The RN Level 1 will access various computer applications to assist in communication, support service delivery and to identify patient needs and requirements.
  • Actively participate in area specific competency requirements, professional development, continuing education, quality improvement and risk management to ensure high quality and evidenced based care.
  • Be a role model, mentor, advocate, clinical teacher, and supervisor, for nursing staff and students, as well as other health professionals.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Tertiary Qualification or related qualification Nursing
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

  • One year full time equivalent experience as a registered nurse in a similar role and role environment
