Position overview
Clinical Forensic Medical Services (CFMS) is a specialised forensic unit within CHS providing medical services in matters involving sexual assault, domestic violence, deaths, persons in custody, and specialised police procedures.
Forensic and Medical Sexual Assault Care (FAMSAC), part of CFMS, is a well-established clinical service that provides forensic medical care to patients from the ACT and surrounding areas. The Clinical Lead is responsible for coordinating and managing the delivery of medical assessments and forensic evidence collection for victims of sexual and interpersonal violence.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Lead the delivery of culturally safe, trauma-informed forensic and medical care for patients who have experienced sexual or interpersonal violence, including supervision and training of staff for routine and complex cases.
- Provide comprehensive forensic and medical care for patients including initial and follow-up consultations, comprehensive documentation, associated medico-legal reports and court attendance.
- Lead, promote and actively participate in achieving competency in all mandatory education requirements and supporting the development, implementation and evaluation of education programs and continuous professional development to foster a learning and development culture.
- Be involved in the delivery of specialised education and training programs for clinical staff, stakeholders, and community groups at the direction of the CNC, Unit Director or Deputy Director.
- Participate in risk management, quality improvement, nursing practice review and clinical research activities to promote optimum service delivery.
- Monitor the standards of clinical practice in conjunction with the CNC and implement strategies to provide opportunities for increased learning.
- Participate in the FAMSAC afterhours on-call roster, including weekends and public holiday.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary Qualification in Nursing.
- Post-graduate qualification in Forensic Nursing (or equivalent) or the willingness to enrol within six months.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Current driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a baseline AFP security clearance.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Essential
- Minimum of 5 years fulltime equivalent post graduate registered nursing experience.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Prior experience in forensic nursing, sexual or women’s health will be highly desirable.
- Experience in providing forensic medical services and medicolegal reports.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
- Pre-employment National Police Check.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

- Demonstrated high-level communication and interpersonal skills, including medicolegal report writing for court processes and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate forensic and medical care initiatives and proven ability to participate in clinical research, quality improvement activities, policy review and development, training, and clinical supervision.
