Position overview
The Maternity Clinical Care Coordinator plays a pivotal role in supporting the Centenary Hospital for Women & Children’s (CHWC) commitment to delivering safe, high quality, evidence based maternity care. As an expert midwifery practitioner, the position provides advanced clinical leadership, coordination and oversight of activity and staffing within the Birth Suite and Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU) and is a point of escalation for clinical concerns after hours for the maternity and gynaecology inpatient areas as well as providing assistance in emergency obstetric situations throughout the hospital.
Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and consumers, the role ensures timely, comprehensive clinical assessment, case management and consultation for women accessing maternity services. Through leadership in clinical standards, service improvement, education and professional practice, the Maternity Clinical Care Coordinator supports the Clinical Midwifery Manager in Birth Suite/MAU and midwives to achieve excellence in maternity care, support positive patient outcomes and strengthen the overall performance and capability of Women, Youth and Children services.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Provide advanced midwifery leadership and expert clinical guidance within the Birth Suite and Maternity Assessment Unit and is the point of clinical escalation for the maternity and gynaecology inpatient areas after hours as well as providing assistance in obstetric emergencies in other maternity areas within CHWC and Canberra Hospital, ensuring safe, evidence‑based, woman‑centred care.
- Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of midwifery and nursing policies, guidelines and clinical standards to support excellence in family‑centred, safe and effective care.
- Monitor clinical practice standards and, in collaboration with the Clinical Midwifery Manager (CMM), implement strategies to address identified performance or practice concerns.
- Support the Clinical Midwifery Manager in all areas in providing immediate leadership and support during challenging clinical events, including facilitating staff and consumer debriefing as required.
- Support day‑to‑day operational management of the Birth Suite and MAU, including midwifery workloads, activity coordination.
- Allocate daily midwifery resources in Birth Suite and MAU to ensure safe staffing, appropriate skill mix and opportunities for staff development, including senior support for birth skills and emergency response.
- Identify and escalate workload or safety concerns to the CMM, collaborating to implement timely and effective solutions.
- Coordinate communication and logistics for incoming maternal transfers, including liaison with consultants and the Patient Flow Coordinator. The MCCC on night duty will also manage patient flow within the maternity gynaecology inpatient areas.
- Provide visible leadership, coaching and performance development for midwifery staff, fostering a culture of professionalism and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to human resource functions including rostering support, coding requirements and management of complex workforce, WHS and industrial matters.
- Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives, service redesign, policy development and strategic planning activities to enhance maternity care delivery.
- Promote trauma‑informed, family‑focused care and support cultural change initiatives that strengthen patient safety and consumer experience.
- Coordinate complex care journeys in partnership with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring women and families remain central to decision‑making and care delivery, while maintaining accountability for personal clinical practice and ongoing professional development.
- Undertake additional duties appropriate to this classification level that contribute to the effective operation of the service.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary Qualification or related qualification in Midwifery
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Have or working towards post graduate studies in Management and/or Leadership.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience post registration working professionally in midwifery or nursing, with extensive experience in Birthing and ability to provide support in both Birthing and MAU.
- Strong leadership skills, including capacity to build cohesive high performing teams.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Prior experience in leadership roles, within birthing unit or MAU or similar.
- Strong organisational skills, including the capacity to simultaneously manage and prioritise multiple issues, demonstrating a high degree of drive.
- Resilience and adaptability in a dynamic health environment.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
