Position overview
The Paediatric Service at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children provides coordinated and integrated health services for children and young people, and their families/carers, for medical, surgical, and mental health care, up to the age of 16 years. The care provided is family centred, safe and effective.
The Paediatric Service is an interdisciplinary service comprising medical, nursing, and allied health professionals and is delivered under a partnership model in which shared decision making and respectful and sensitive care are central to achieving outcomes.
This position works across the Paediatric Service in the Division of Women Youth and Children (WYC) and reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) of ward 1A.
The Children and Adolescent Behavioural Care Nurse will provide expert knowledge and skills while leading the coordination of mental health, behavioural and wellbeing for children and young people receiving care in the inpatient Paediatric Service. This role will liaise with key stakeholders such as the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and the WY&CCHP School Youth Health Nurses (SYHN) to strengthen the discharge pathway.

This role is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, 0800 – 1630.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Under limited direction of the CNM:
- Provide advanced comprehensive nursing assessment, planning and coordination of care, for children and young people affected by trauma and/or mental health concerns, who may also be exhibiting associated behaviours during an inpatient admission. This includes using high level communication, advocacy and knowledge within a family partnership model.
- Provide expert advice and act as an expert resource to other health professionals on the clinical management of children and young people with challenging behaviour and/or mental health illness.
- Develop and implement systems and processes related to screening and assessment of children and young people in relation to their mental health and wellbeing, as outlined in Standard 5: Comprehensive Care of the National Safety and Quality Health Care Standards.
- With an awareness of the social determinants of health, identifying and engaging needed internal and external stakeholders to provide effective ongoing health care and supports, during and after an admission.
- Evaluate and implement policies and clinical guidelines ensuring they are evidence-based and align with legislation including the ACT Mental Health Act 2015 and Children and Young People Act 2008.
- Mentor and support professional development and competencies of nursing colleagues and maintain own advanced level knowledge through relevant opportunities in education and management.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

- Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Relevant post graduate qualifications (or working towards)

- Post Graduate qualifications in Management and/or Leadership
Experience

Essential
- A minimum 5 years’ full time equivalent work experience in acute care nursing
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Standards and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.

- Demonstrated advanced knowledge, practice and competence on the broad range of issues that impact on the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people, including providing trauma informed care.
- Proven leadership experience including the ability to provide strategic direction in the specialty area of adolescent mental health and wellbeing, contributing to clinical governance systems and processes to optimise evidence-based nursing practice.
- Ability to initiate, implement, embed and evaluate quality improvement, education and research projects which contribute to improved knowledge, practice and care relevant to children and young people.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health, and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
- Demonstrated high level interpersonal and communication skills utilising a family partnership approach, with proven ability to work within an interdisciplinary team and develop positive working relationships with patients and families and a broad range of professional disciplines.
