Perioperative Services is responsible for delivering inpatient and outpatients surgical services The Division includes Anaesthesia, Pain Management Unit, Operating Theatres, Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit, Day Surgery Unit and Admissions / Extended Day Surgery Unit.

The Peri-Operative Unit at Canberra Hospital consists of a Day of Surgery Admissions (DOSA) Unit, Operating Theatres covering a wide range of surgical specialties, Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and Extended Day Surgery Unit (EDSU) together with several out of areas procedural/invasive specialty areas.

The Nurse Manager role– Perioperative, reports directly to the Assistant Director of Nursing Perioperative Unit and join the Nursing Leadership team. This position is responsible, in collaboration with the individual Clinical Nurse Consultants, for the management of the physical, fiscal and human resources in the Perioperative Unit.

The Nursing Leadership team is responsible for the strategic and operational management of the Perioperative unit, nursing workforce, ensuring safe, efficient and effective operations of the business unit.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Provide a Managerial and Clinical resource for defined clinical service area(s). While liaising with unit clinical leaders in planning and coordinating staffing resources by:
    • Ensuring rosters and allocation of staff within areas of responsibility will provide a safe and high level of patient care
    • Monitor and take responsibility for staffing levels
    • Participate in staff recruitment, orientation, and staff development programs
  • Shared responsibility with the Clinical Nurse Consultant for the management of staff issues, ensuring consistency with relevant legislation, policies, practice standards, processes and industrial framework for nurses within clinical units.
  • Shared accountability with the Clinical Nurse Consultant for allocation of and expenditure of resources within designated clinical areas. This includes the provision of accurate information on changes to staffing requirements based on ongoing assessment of need, as part of the nursing budget preparation review, maintenance and purchasing.
  • Act as a resource and support person for all staff in the development and implementation of quality improvement activities. Evaluate and initiate policy and procedural change as required.
  • Lead, promote and progress change processes as identified within ACT Health, The Canberra Hospital, nursing strategic and business plans. In conjunction with Clinical Nurse Consultants develop local business plans which incorporate and link to Canberra Health Services plans and frameworks.
  • Conduct annual performance appraisal interviews with staff using the personal professional development program. Assist in the development and implementation of information systems and ensure staff receive regular feedback, education, to meet the required standard of delivery focusing on goals, continuing professional development to meet best practices and quality processes.
  • Ensure the provisions of a safe environment for all patients and staff within the Perioperative Unit through ensuring Infection Control and WH&S guidelines are followed. Including actively promoting and maintaining a harmonious working relationship between all members of the health care team and ancillary staff.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
