Position overview
The Clinical Nurse Consultant reports to the Assistant Director of Nursing. This position will work in a team of two Clinical Nurse Consultants to provide high level of support in coordinating and managing the clinical nursing staff in the Emergency Department. Applicants should be self-motivated and be able to work under minimal direct supervision. There is an expectation that the successful applicant will maintain accountability for their own practice standards, education, and work collaboratively with the Emergency Department leadership team to support the professional development of the Emergency Department nursing workforce.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Under limited direction of the ADON you will perform with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
You will:
- Be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of services within the ED including the management and coordination of workloads and oversight patient flow both internal and external to the ED.
- Lead, coordinate, and work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate change management initiatives to achieve the strategic objectives and KPIs of the ED and the Division of Medicine.
- Provide leadership for nurses in all aspects of clinical practice to provide a safe, efficient, patient focused and accessible service, based on evidence and best practice and models of care including planning, implementing, and evaluating professional development, research, and quality.
- Accountable for the flexible allocation of human and financial resources within the clinical environment to ensure achievement of an agreed level of service and reporting of variances against agreed targets.
- Lead and develop nursing staff within the designated clinical area fostering and providing an environment that encourages regular feedback and innovative change to meet the constant demands within the clinical healthcare setting. Ensure performance framework agreements are in place.
- Participate, support and contribute to the development and review of evidence-based policies and procedures, participate in ED quality improvement initiatives and risk management strategies, clinical research and audits in conjunction with the ADON, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Nurse Manager and Clinical Support Nurse.
- Lead, coordinate, and work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate change management initiatives to achieve the strategic objectives and KPIs of the ED and the Division of Medicine.
- Comply with and deliver against the required KPI’s in respect to Workplace Safety, Workplace Lead the delivery of clinical services in the Emergency Department to ensure they are patient centred, adhere to best practice, and coordinated to provide safe and timely access to clinical care through appropriate use of resources, applicable standards of care and legislation.
- Participate in a Monday to Friday office hours roster.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary Qualification in nursing
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Holds or working towards relevant Post Graduate qualification in emergency nursing
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience working professionally in an Emergency Department.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
