Canberra Hospital Emergency Department is the major tertiary, trauma and referral centre for the ACT and surrounding regions. Our ED provides care for adults and children of all ages, and specialised assessment and treatment for all illnesses and injuries. A dynamic and highly skilled team that aims for excellence in care.
Registered Nurses at this level provide a competent and safe level of nursing care commensurate with experience to patients within Canberra Health Services (CHS). The activities required of roles at this level are predominately clinical in nature. Nurses at this level accept accountability for their own practice standards, activities delegated to others and the guidance and development of less experienced staff.
The activities required of this role includes clinical, leadership, education, work health and safety and quality improvement. Nurses at this level accept accountability for their own practice standards, participate in team building and decision making; and support less experienced staff in the clinical area.
Applicants are required to demonstrate knowledge of concepts of adult learning. Post graduate qualifications in critical care nursing and /or clinical education is highly desirable.
Key responsibilities
Under limited direction of the Clinical Nurse Consultant and Clinical Coordinator and or Navigator, you will perform comprehensive nursing care and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and adapt quickly to a changing environment. You will:
- Provide comprehensive and evidenced-based nursing care based on patient’s individual needs including advanced assessment, intervention, and evaluation.
- Accountable for patient safety and quality of care through planning, coordinating to deliver exceptional healthcare and practice in a way that acknowledges the dignity, culture, values, beliefs, and rights of individuals and/or groups.
- Supervise, direct and guide nursing team members. Performs the role of ACCESS in line with the guidelines of Australian College of Critical Care Nurses and can respond to MET calls, if required.
- Monitor and review standards of nursing practice- to ensure that colleagues are working their scope of nursing practice and follows up-to-date clinical guidelines in patient care delivery.
- Provide coordinated multidisciplinary care by liaising with patients and their families, medical, nursing, allied health, support staff and external organizations.
- Participate in continuing professional development of self and colleagues by planning and reviewing CHS Performance Plan.
- Engages in evidenced-based quality improvement, clinical research and work health and safety activities within Canberra Health Services.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation

Qualifications

Essential
- Tertiary Qualification in nursing.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Graduate Certificate in critical care
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A minimum 4 years full time equivalent nursing experience in critical care.
Desirable
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
