Position overview
The Cardiac Catheter Laboratory (CCL) at Canberra Hospital is a specialised clinical service providing a comprehensive range of cardiac diagnostic, interventional and electrophysiology procedures. Canberra Hospital operates two purpose-built and fully equipped laboratories, delivering a 24-hour service to patients with acute and chronic cardiac conditions. The CCL also incorporates a Day Procedure Unit. Standard operational hours are Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 18:00, with on-call service supporting STEMI activations outside of standard business hours.
The Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC), CCL is accountable for the delivery of high-quality nursing care and the effective operational management of the CCL. This role provides professional and clinical leadership to ensure excellence in patient care, safety and service delivery outcomes. The CNC is responsible for the efficient management of human, financial and material resources, optimisation of patient flow and the maintenance of safe, compliant and sustainable clinical service.
Working in close partnership with the Cardiology Unit Director, the CNC leads the quality, safety and clinical governance agenda for the CCL, ensuring alignment with national standards, organisational priorities and evidence-based practice. The role also has a key responsibility for workforce capability, ensuring nursing staff have access to appropriate education, training, professional development and support to maintain high levels of clinical competence and deliver contemporary, patient-centred care.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Under limited direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing, you will:
- Provide strong leadership for nursing staff across all aspects of clinical practice and models of care, including the planning, implementation and evaluation of professional development, education, research, teaching, workforce planning and the promotion of a high-quality work environment within the CCL.
- Be accountable for the effective allocation and management of human, financial and material resources within the CCL to achieve agreed service levels, including monitoring and reporting on variances against established targets.
- Lead and coordinate change management initiatives in partnership with the team to support and achieve the strategic objectives of CCL services.
- Provide leadership in clinical governance and actively contribute to the development, maintenance and review of clinical standards, policies, procedures and protocols.
- Monitor relevant Key Performance Indicators, National Standards and quality data, and develop and implement appropriate management plans to achieve required outcomes.
- Ensure the provision of a safe work environment for patients and staff by adhering to Infection Control and Work Health and Safety guidelines, while actively promoting and maintaining respectful, harmonious working relationships among all members of the healthcare team and support staff.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary Qualification or related qualification in Nursing.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Post-graduate qualification in a relevant area.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Minimum five years’ experience working professionally in acute care nursing.
Desirable
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
