Position overview
The Women and Children Division within North Canberra Hospital provides Maternity, Neonatal & Gynaecology services to women and their families in the ACT. These services include antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care; gynaecology care; neonatal special care nursery support and domiciliary care. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team including a midwifery and nursing team, medical staff, and allied health.
This position is for Transition to Practice midwives in their first 2-3 years of practice who wish to work in a model that provides continuity of midwifery care and to work in their full scope of practice. The midwife will have knowledge in midwifery practice and demonstrate ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team.
The midwife will have access to a mentor, clinical education resources and support from other more experienced midwifery staff. They will have a reduced clinical load (75% caseload) to allow for their learning needs. They will work within a small team and be on call for labour and birth during their allocated set days (8 days per fortnight).
The midwife will take responsibility for their own professional development goals in collaboration with their Clinical Midwife Consultant (CMC).

Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Under the direction of the Clinical Midwifery Manager
- Work as a primary midwife within a caseload model, providing evidence‑based continuity of care from pregnancy to 10 days postnatal across hospital and community settings.
- Work in partnership with women and their families, supporting informed decision‑making in line with Canberra Health Services Policies and Procedures, National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral and relevant legislation
- Practice in a way that acknowledges the dignity, culture, values, beliefs, and rights of individuals and/or groups.
- Promote midwives within the multidisciplinary team as valuable experts contributing to positive outcomes for women and their families.
- Understand and practice within own scope of clinical practice.
- Promote an environment that encourages both individual and team development.
- Maintain competence, including mandatory education and assessment; participate in the development of policy, procedures, quality activities and clinical meetings.
- Participate and encourage an environment of active lifelong learning.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

- Working knowledge of the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral.
- Understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards align with this role.
- Developing or demonstrated competence in skills such as suturing, IV cannulation, obstetric emergencies, and balloon catheter insertion (training and support provided).
Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A tertiary qualification in midwifery
- Registered as a Registered Midwife (Division 1) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Current unrestricted driver licence.
- The successful applicant will be available to work in an on-call capacity on their rostered days of work, including weekends.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A minimum 1 year of midwifery experience.
- Ability to work safely within scope of practice in a busy clinical environment, seeking guidance and support appropriately.
Desirable
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Frameworkand all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
Ongoing employment is subject to the maintenance of the above requirements.
