Position overview

The Department of Neonatology is the only tertiary level 5-6 Neonatal Unit in the ACT and surrounding NSW. It includes Intensive Care (NICU), Special Care (SCN), ACT NETS retrieval service, Newborn and Parent Support Service, and NICU Growth and Development Clinic. NICU and SCN have 39 funded beds. There are approximately 3,500 births per year at Centenary Hospital for Women and Children (CHWC), and 700 neonatal admissions to the Unit. The facility offers individualised family-centered care in a developmentally appropriate and technologically state-of-the-art environment.

Together with a team of Clinical Development Nurses (CDN) you will support nursing staff in the SCN to achieve excellence in clinical practice, standards of care and improved outcomes throughout the patient journey. CDN support and education occurs across morning and evening shifts, seven days a week. Therefore, a rotating roster is a requirement of this role.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited direction of the Clinical Support Manager, you will perform the Clinical Development Nurse role. You will:

  • Facilitate clinical teaching within the workplace for nursing staff and the multidisciplinary team utilising adult learning principles, while following clinical practice standards and policies in a hospital environment.
  • Provide orientation and learning programs to meet the individual needs of new staff.
  • Promote high quality health outcomes by participating in policy development, education and research within a quality framework.
  • Support cultural and organisational change creating a culture of participation in the department.
  • Review and evaluate clinical practice identifying staff development needs and undertaking competency assessment.
  • Work within current legislative guidelines and appropriately model a commitment to Canberra Health Services’ Values and the provision of a safe working environment.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Integrate advanced theoretical knowledge, evidence from a range of sources and own experience to devise and achieve agreed care outcomes for recipients of healthcare services in line with organisational priorities.
  • Provide clinical leadership for professional and clinical practice, education, and research.
  • Provide support, guidance, mentoring, preceptorship, role modelling and promote cooperation and collaborative teamwork.
  • Provide and update education resources for staff, recipients of healthcare services, carers, and others in consultation.
  • Act as a clinical and educational resource within an area based on knowledge, skills, and experience.
  • Contribute to the support of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Work collaboratively in leading implementation of policy, practice changes and clinical innovations.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Tertiary qualification in nursing.
  • Completed or working towards completing post-graduate qualifications in Neonatal Nursing and/or Nursing Education.
  • Registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Experience

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

  • A minimum of four years’ full time equivalent experience working professionally in neonatal nursing.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
