Position overview
NAPPS provides a 7 day a week, early discharge program for the NICU and SCN. NAPPS is a home visiting service for the families of infants who no longer require intensive medical and nursing treatment but still require some nursing care, support and advice at home.
As a NAPPS nurse you will require expert neonatal skills and knowledge while working in this semi-autonomous role. You will work in a small team supporting the parents/carers with the home care of their infant until the infant’s needs can be met by other support services in the community.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Provide direct, comprehensive patient care to neonates and/or infants with complex medical and/or surgical conditions in the home environment utilising the nursing process and working within the boundaries of professional legislation and existing policies and procedures. Medical support will be provided when required as per policy and guidelines
- Communicate effectively with the families, carers and multidisciplinary team, including internal and external stakeholders, (orally, non-verbally and in writing) in a diverse range of situations, using consistent and transparent processes
- Plan, initiate, participate and evaluate pre and post discharge educational programs for parents/carers and families utilising adult learning principles
- Support safe and evidence-based practice of self and others through:
- Promotion of evidence-based practice
- Contribution to research/and or promotion of the utilisation of research as a source of learning and innovation within the speciality
- Regular contribution to the development and review of policy
- Quality improvement initiatives
- Work within current legislative guidelines and appropriate model a commitment to CHS values and the provision of a safe working environment
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A tertiary qualification in nursing.
- Registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Completion (or working towards completion) of post-graduate qualifications in Neonatal Special Care or Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing
- Current Driver’s Licence
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Experience working professionally in Neonatal Intensive Care or Special Care Nursery
- A minimum 4 years full time equivalent nursing experience.
Desirable
- Prior experience working in a patient’s home setting
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.

- Proven ability to collaborate within the multidisciplinary team in the pre-discharge planning of the infant and their family as well as the ability to apply principles of parental participation/inclusion in the home environment.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively within a multi-disciplinary team environment with proven negotiation and consultation skills, to establish relationships with consumers, and internal and external stakeholders to achieve high quality care.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, initiate and lead education programs for parents and families in the program utilising adult learning principles.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
