Position overview
The Division of Cancer and Ambulatory Support (CAS) provides a comprehensive range of assessment, diagnostic and treatment services through inpatient and outpatient settings. Central Outpatients Department are also managed by this Division.
The Director of Nursing operates within the Public Sector Management Act (1994), the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. The position is accountable and responsible to the Executive Director CAS for the management of a safe, effective nursing service across the clinical units of the Division. The position operates in partnership with other members of the Executive of the Division and other Divisions as appropriate.
The Director of Nursing is responsible for professional nursing standards and work practices within CAS and for the provision of executive nursing leadership and high-level advice in the overall management of the clinical, material and financial resources allocated to ensure the delivery of safe, efficient, effective, quality consumer and client focused care.
The position has responsibility within the Division for Nurse Education Programs, Quality and Safety, Organisational Development and Workforce Planning.
The position has a professional reporting relationship to the Nursing and Midwifery Director and participates as a member of the senior nursing and midwifery leadership team for CHS.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Provide strategic leadership, direction, planning and operational input into the delivery of nursing services across the broad range of services provided by the Division based on best available evidence.
- Develop the clinical and professional practice of nursing that supports models of care, statutory obligations, professional development, education, research, clinical teaching, practice development and clinical supervision opportunities for nursing staff.
- Lead, coordinate and work in partnership with staff and stakeholders across the division to implement quality improvement and workplace safety systems that support standards and staff competence to achieve the strategic objectives of the Division.
- Collaborate and work in partnership with Nursing and Midwifery Director and nursing executive, and other key stakeholders in the achievement of the strategic directions framework for nurses and midwives across the health service, and the ACT where appropriate.
- Manage physical, human and financial resources and divisional clinical performance reporting requirements as delegated to the position.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with key educational and professional nursing organisations and represent the division on committees within and outside the CHS clinical and corporate governance system.
- Manage strategic and operational relationships associated with complex industrial processes in conjunction with the executive to ensure sound industrial relations with the Australian Nurses and Midwifery Federation.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in nursing.
- Be registered or be eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
Experience
Specific experience includes, but is not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A minimum of 5 years’ full time equivalent experience working professionally in hospital settingis preferred.
- Be registered or be eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Prior to commencement
- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

- Proven extensive nursing leadership and management experience at the executive nurse level with demonstrated achievement in leading and managing cultural and organisational change and developing, managing and reviewing complex clinical systems associated with clinical governance and quality improvement processes which contribute to and maintain high level customer service and health outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and manage complex consultative processes and to formulate strategic directions for nursing within a changing environment.
