Position overview
The Division of Cancer and Ambulatory Support provides a comprehensive range of cancerscreening, assessment, diagnostic and treatment services and palliative care through inpatient, outpatient and community settings. The division is also responsible for Walk in Centres, Central Outpatients and Central Health Intake.
The McGrath Breast Care Nurse will work as part of the division’s Cancer Supportive Care team. The Cancer Specialist Nurse role is responsible for coordinating the care of clients with complex needs, related to a diagnosis of non-metastatic breast cancer across the cancer journey. The Breast Care Nurse role is a partnership with the McGrath Foundation and under the funding agreement is offered four days per week under a three-year contract.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
1. Provide specialised breast care, information, education, and support to clients relating to breast cancer in accordance with evidence based clinical practice guidelines and the McGrath Model of Care.
2. Ensure that the patient and their family have access to specialised breast cancer support/education/information across the disease trajectory through facilitation of communication and continuity of care between relevant stakeholders involved in the care of the patient.
3. Collaborate with members of the multidisciplinary treatment team and relevant community service providers to coordinate the delivery of client-oriented, specialised support services across the care continuum, to clients and their families.
4. Attend and participate in the coordination of regular Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings and Multidisciplinary clinics for tumor groups and provide expert clinical advice and clinical leadership on evidence-based breast care services to nursing staff, allied health, and other members of the multidisciplinary team (or to health care providers a woman with breast cancer may encounter).
5. Actively facilitate continuous quality improvement of Cancer Specialist Nurse practice and participate in McGrath Foundation events which may include some travel.
6. Contribute to ongoing research projects which contribute to the achievement of optimal outcomes for patients with cancer, their family and health services.
7. Contribute to the collection of disease specific information on treatment and cancer outcomes across the region and ensure that they are in accordance with ‘best practice standards.
8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Post graduate qualifications in cancer nursing, oncology, palliative care or other relevant areas
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience working professionally as a registered nurse with at least 3 years recent full time equivalent experience in oncology/ Palliative care or cancer stream specific nursing
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks
Desirable
- Experience in the management of patients and families with a diagnosis of Breast Cancer
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
