Position overview
The Peri-Operative Service at Canberra Hospital consists of a Day of Surgery Admissions (DoSA) Unit, 22 Operating Theatres covering a wide range of surgical specialities, Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and an Extended Day Surgery Unit (EDSU) together with several out of areas procedural / invasive specialty areas.
The Clinical Development Nurse is seen by the organisation as a source of expert nursing knowledge, skills and attributes and is expected to have a demonstrated competence in advanced nursing practice, provide guidance to less experienced nursing staff and provide direct nursing care as required.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Under limited direction of the EDSU Clinical Nurse Consultant and the Perioperative Nurse Educator you will perform at a higher level of skill and the ability to perform a more demanding role covering the domains: clinical care, leadership, education, safety, and communication. You will:
- Promote evidence based best practice by facilitating education for Extended Day Surgery Nurses at all stages of the learning continuum by:
- Orientating and precepting of new staff/students
- Undertaking competency assessments as required.
- Providing one on one supervision of clinical practice as required.
- Disseminating knowledge gained through attendance at educational forums through feedback at staff meetings and/or written reports.
- Support staff in the delivery of education programs/ packages.
- Fulfil the obligations of the professional role by functioning within legal and organisational requirements and acting as a role model in the provision of high-quality holistic care.
- Educate and actively participate in risk assessment, incident and accident reporting, lead and support peers in continuous quality improvement activities, program-based research, and accreditation with the aim of improving the level of service to patients and the department.
- Monitor and keep records of new graduate nurses participating in the Perioperative Foundation Program together with existing nursing staff within the Extended Day Surgery Unit to ensure all essential skills are credentialed annually.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and leaders and have in depth knowledge of legislation affecting clinical practice within ACT Health. Provide input into the development and revision of clinical policy and practice manuals, nursing practice review and clinical research activities associated with the Perioperative Unit.
- Maintain professional standards, current policies and procedures. Facilitate and participate in the credentialing processes as required by the department. Maintain clinical and other skills that are required for this position through accessing appropriate education and staff development opportunities. Enhance own professional competence through ongoing self-initiated research.
- Facilitate reflective practice for nurses and facilitate or arrange debriefing sessions, providing advice and support as required.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation

- Accountable for NMBA and own standards, actions and the outcomes of own nursing practice, professional advice given and for activities delegated to RNs, ENs, AINs, nursing students or other healthcare workers
- Adhere to established guidelines, protocols, procedures, standards, and systems of work as set by the organisation and participate in developing, evaluating, and updating clinical service procedures, protocols, standards, and guidelines.
- Engage in incident reporting/investigation and conduct quality improvements audits and develop risk minimisation strategies/activities to promote safe, and/or rectify unsafe, practice.
- Consult and provide nursing advice on the development and application of quality and risk management frameworks.
- Contribute to promoting a learning culture by encouraging reflection and professional development, providing clinical teaching, in-service education, and assisting/supporting others to maintain portfolios/ records of learning while acting as a clinical and educational resource within an area based on knowledge, skills, and experience.
- Act as a role model in supporting staff e.g., orientation and capacity building within the clinical environment.
- Participate in developing and undertaking quality initiatives, clinical audits, clinical trials, and research.
- Work collaboratively in leading implementation of policy, practice changes and clinical innovations.
- Proactively engage with the Clinical Nurse Consultant and others to achieve best practice outcomes within the work unit environment.
Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- A Relevant Tertiary Qualification with education or working towards.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Four (4) years (6840 hours) post graduate hours of practice worked in direct or indirect roles working (inclusive of 7 weeks annual leave per year)
OR
- Completion of a relevant post graduate certificate (or working towards) and three (3) years (5130 hours) worked in direct or indirect roles
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Please include Certificate of Clinical Hours Worked from Shared Services. Those hours can be inclusive of interstate experience which requires a Certificate of Clinical Hours Worked from your previous hospital’s HR department
Desirable
- Previous experience in a Day Surgery Unit or similar within a Tertiary hospital will be highly desirable
