Position overview
The Central Outpatient Department (COPD) at Canberra Hospital sits within the Division of Cancer and Ambulatory Support (CAS), providing clinic-based care to a wide variety of medical and surgical specialties. Nursing staff work across medical and surgical services including neurology, neurosurgery, endocrinology, general medicine, rheumatology, dermatology, infectious diseases, orthopaedics, plastics, vascular, urology, ear nose & throat and oral and maxillofacial.
The Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) role is a composite role of both clinical and managerial responsibilities and reports to the Assistant Director of Nursing for Cancer and Ambulatory Support. The CNM provides expert leadership in supporting and coordinating a clinical service team to ensure proficient, professional, and appropriate day to day operational management of client care delivery.
The CNM works collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and key stakeholders and ensures practice standards, relevant policies, processes and budgetary requirements are met. Additionally, the CNM is responsible and accountable for upholding the strategic direction and clinical governance across the Central Outpatients services.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
- Provide management and leadership to all aspects of services within the Central Outpatients Department, including clinical practice, workforce planning, rostering, fiscal management, stakeholder engagement, and supporting education and professional development of self and others.
- Works collaboratively with team members to identify learning needs and enhance clinical skills, expertise and professional development to achieve the strategic objectives within the Central Outpatients Department.
- Partakes in the development, maintenance and review of clinical standards, policies and protocols that contribute to the provision of safe, efficient, client focused, and timely access to care.
- Facilitates the provision of a supportive, positive and opportunistic learning environment for students, new graduate nurses, temporary/casual and permanent staff members.
- Maintain a high level of interpersonal and communication skills to work in concordance with the unit’s multidisciplinary teams and key stakeholders to facilitate appropriate operational management, planning and performance.
- Provide support through the facilitation of structured reflective feedback and/or debriefing sessions amongst individual or staffing groups.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Tertiary qualification in nursing.
- Registered, or eligible to register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable
- Relevant post graduate qualifications
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Specific experience includes, but is not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Minimum of 5 years’ full time equivalent experience working professionally as a Registered Nurse
- Experience in nursing leadership
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Desirable
- Prior experience in ambulatory care will be highly desirable
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances.
